This past week marks the 15th anniversary of "Legally Blonde" blessing our lives. That's right, people, 15 years ago on July 13, Elle Woods graced our television screens with her fabulous presence. Granted, I was only five at the time, but since then "Legally Blonde," and all of the amazing one-liners that come with it, has become my favorite movie by far. In order to celebrate 15 years of Elle Woods, "Legally Blonde" deserves an appreciation post.
Elle's story follows a type of 'rags to riches' flow, but in her case it's 'beauty to beauty-and-brains.' As we watch Elle grow as a character, we only love her more. She never gives up who she started as--a fashion-loving, strong-witted cosmo girl--but instead learns how to grow and develop and find out just what it means for her (and, of course, it ultimately helps her win her first case.)
Now, it doesn't seem as if it will be that way from the start. Elle simply goes to Harvard to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III, so we think it's simply another desperate romance movie, but boy are we wrong. After finding a friend in Paulette, as well as Emmett, Elle sets out to show the world "how valuable Elle Woods can be."
And just like that, Elle is confident, determined and doesn't give up, no matter the situation. Elle Woods is the girl that all little girls should look up to instead of a princess (move aside, Elsa.) She has brains, beauty and the confidence to stand up, not only for herself, but for others as well. She's not ashamed to be herself, as demonstrated on her first day at Harvard, clad in her most "professional" outfit, joyfully greeting all of the other students who give her looks of complete bewilderment.
Finally, Elle is so remarkably confident in herself that it is difficult not to love her. When encouraged to have backups if Harvard didn't work out, Elle said that she did not need backups. She was so entirely confident in herself as she said, with a smile from ear to ear, "I once had to judge a tighty-whitey contest for Lambda Kappa Pi, trust me, I can handle anything." Nothing was holding her back because she believed she would get into Harvard, no problem. You go, Elle.
So thank you, "Legally Blonde", for giving us one of the best female leads of all times. Elle reminds us that we can do anything we put our minds to, regardless of what others might say. Because, according to our favorite pink protagonist, "You must always have faith in yourself."
Here's to another 15 years, Elle.
