I'm a feminist and I don't feel ashamed for saying it. I have read numerous comments on social media about how the women's march is a disgrace. But in reality, the march is for women who want to end the inequalities that many continue to face.
During my first year of college, I learned so much in my women's class. I read stories from rape and prostitution to the gender pay gap. The class taught me that we as women cannot continue to allow a patriarchy society to exist. Here are five reasons why I am a feminist who envision equality in the near future and why you should be too.
1. Feminism Means Equality and You Should Not Be Scared to Use the Term!
Feminism simply means that women are trying to fight for the same equality and treatment that men would receive.
2. Tampon Tax
It angers me to see that tampons and other feminine products are being taxed. Lawmakers believe that tampons are a luxury item, therefore the tax came into place. Tampons are a necessity that should be excluded from taxes. However, women are forced to pay the tax that can become an economic burden for some. Why should you continue to pay a tax for having a period?
3. Viagra is insured, why can't birth control?
Birth control will soon be no longer insured by health insurance companies per the government request. This is an unfair treatment to all the ladies out there who rely on these pills. If birth control becomes uninsured, then shouldn't Viagra?
4. Wage Gap
Would you be able to watch your co-workers get paid more for the same job? I know I wouldn't be able to and fighting for equality means women can get the same pay as their male co-workers.
5. Fighting so the Next Generation of Girls Wouldn't Have To
When can women be treated as equal? For the past decades, women are fighting to earn the same respect and treatment that men receive. If all of us continue to unite in this movement, then equality can come sooner and little girls can grow up knowing that they can be and do anything that boys can.
