During finals week, it can be difficult to feel motivated. Something I like to do is get a good amount of work done for the day and wind down with a movie, especially one that will make me feel inspired and motivated. Here are my top 5 lady empowerment movies to get you in the mood to kick some butt.
1. Legally Blonde
Elle Woods, a young, blonde and popular sorority sister from Bel Air, gets the shock of her life when she gets dumped by her seemingly perfect East Coast boyfriend, Warner. Upon discovering that what Warner really wanted to do was marry a law student, Elle decides that she wants one thing: to become a student at the prestigious Harvard Law School. Watch Elle as she goes on a journey to discover her true passions and stand strong in the face of adversity. Totally inspiring.
2. Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich is based on the true story of Erin Brockovich. A twice-divorce mother of three young children, Erin is desperate to find a job to support them. Where she ends up is a law office, and despite her lack of formal education, reveals the unjust practices of a huge business and lead the fight in the legal crackdown against it. Erin Brockovich is the kind of movie that shows you that you can do anything.
3. Akeelah and the Bee
Keke Palmer debuted as young Akeelah Anderson, a spelling whiz from South L.A. Despite the backlash from her mother, friends, and community, Akeelah studies hard and participates in her local spelling bees, eventually overcoming the overwhelming odds against her and heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. This movie shows that with enough determination, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
4. Matilda
Matilda tells the magical story of an intelligent young girl with incredible powers. Matilda, though constantly being beaten down by her adopted parents and brother, reads more than anything else. When her parents finally put her in school, she has to deal with a new enemy, the principal of her new school. With the help of her new teacher, Miss Honey, she exacts her revenge and ends with using her powers for good. A seriously heartwarming one.
5. Mad Max: Fury Road
In a post-apocalyptic world, a society is under the control of an evil dictator who uses many as his slaves. Furiosa, with the help of Mad Max and the dictator's wives, go on a mission to escape to freedom. What they end up doing is freeing a nation. Plus, this movie was a huge winner at some of the award shows this year.
