The Fear Behind Following Your Passion

I work at a coffee shop, though that is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. I love coffee don't get me wrong, but it is not my passion. I came into work one night and began to talk with one of my co-workers. We got on the topic of school and what we want to do as a profession. One of the first things my co-worker said to me was "I feel like I have been in a drought, but I woke up this morning and was so happy." I asked him why and he said: "I picked up my guitar for the first time in years and did what I loved."

Now, why would anyone want to do something they don't love? The answer to this is fear. Fear of not living up to peoples expectations or not making enough money. Many people don't realize that the biggest fear they have is not being happy. People go to school, get a college degree hoping to make money. Some people love what they went to school for, while other people just did it because of reasons other than because it makes them happy. It's scary to follow your passion and when you do you have to be smart about it. First, does this make you happy? If it does, how can you be the best at it so you can make a living?

I grew up in a family who did what they loved and luckily was able to make a living off of it. This is because they focused all of their time and energy in practicing their craft, learning about the business, and continuously looking for ways to better themselves and their business. If you have a vision for something, don't just throw it away because of fear. Every creation started with just one idea. It is your job to put that idea into action.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
