There are so many reasons to love summertime! It seems like there is so much more to experience during the summer and more time in which to do so. Adventures abound and good times are abundant. In no particular order, here are the top 15 reasons I personally love summer:
1. The obvious one: no school
I mean, I love learning new things as much as the next nerd, but I also love not having to do homework and being able to learn on my own terms.
2. More time to work.
Okay, the work isn’t super fun all the time, but the paycheck certainly is. Also, there were way too many Mr. Krabs gifs to choose from for this one.
3. Time for reading
I get more books read in three months of summer than the other nine months of the year. I can spend hours a day, just reading. That’s heaven, right there.
4. Lemonade
I had a lemonade stand once or twice as a kid, but it was a lot of work and we didn’t make enough money to make it worth it. I love lemonade, though, and it always seems to taste better in the summertime.
5. Bonfires and campfires
My friends have learned that one way they can definitely convince me to leave the house and hang out with them is by telling me that there will be a bonfire or a campfire. Some of my fondest memories are associated with campfires. The smell is one of my favorites, and there’s something so soothing about watching the flames. There’s usually good company and good times to be had when there’s a campfire or a bonfire.
6. Eating outside
When my dad grills, we get to eat outside. The table is smaller, so my family is physically closer together. While we’re squished up together, eating dinner and simultaneously being eaten by bugs, it’s a unique bonding experience that we only get to have during the summer.
7. Watermelon
YUM. Just don’t wear white and you’ll be fine.
Bonus gif: Some cute little Watermelon Stevens. (I couldn't help myself.)
8. Catching up on television shows
Or binging new shows. I don’t know about you, but I fall way behind on my TV shows during the last month of school. During the summer I can catch up, so I’m ready to roll in the fall when they all come back!
9. Playing video games
On a similar note, I barely play video games at all during the school year (scandalous, I know, but something has to go so that I can actually get my work done), but as soon as summer hits I can make up for lost time. If you do this too, this is a gentle reminder to get up off your bum and do something productive once in a while instead of playing for hours at a time.
10. Catching up with friends
When I was still in high school, summer was the magical time when I got to meet with all of my friends who’d been in college the previous school year. Now that I’m in college, I get to meet with friends who are fellow college students and friends who are current high school students, and it’s going to be great!
11. Going to baseball games
Because there’s pretty much no better way to spend your evening than spitting sunflower seed shells/chewing bubble gum/chowing down on garlic fries while you watch some baseball (and, if you're like me, admire some male physiques while you're at it). In all honesty, though, I love watching baseball because it’s a sport that’s slow enough for me to actually follow, I get to spend time with my family and friends, and there’s just an overall pleasant atmosphere that I’ve loved since middle school. Until someone starts yelling at the ump for an unfavorable call (I’m looking at you, Dad).
12. Vacations![]()
Whether you go on road trips or prefer a faster mode of transportation, family vacations (or friend group vacations) can be a blast! Again, some bonding and reconnecting between family members or friends is much-needed after a hectic school year. Plus, there are fun sights to see and experiences to be had!
13. Sleeping in![]()
Unless you’re working in the mornings, you can sleep in during the summer. Finally.
14. No need for socks
My feet are always cold. Always. In the summer, the temperature is usually warm enough that I can finally wear sandals or go barefoot without my toes turning blue. Good times.
15. Good vibes all around
No matter where you are for your summer, you can usually find something that makes you happy. For me, good vibes can be found in singing around a campfire, reading on the deck, playing ukulele while sitting on the lawn, stargazing, or pretty much anywhere else. You just have to be open to them!
