My Favorite Things About the Holidays

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

My Favorite Things About the Holidays
Galiana Clark

I look forward to Christmas time so much each year. Here are some reasons why.

For each person who is stressed out and, dare I say, Grinch-y, there is another who is full of Christmas spirit. I abhor going out during the holidays because everyone is in a rush and franticly running around the store with reckless abandon. Although, when I do have to go to the store, I always seem to be given the gift of a pleasant interaction.

Someone who lets you go in front of them in line because you have less items than they do but enough to fill up your arms.

Someone who comments in support of something you've selected.

Someone who offers assistance.

Someone who notices you jamming out in your car and in turn, starts to jam out with you.

THE LIGHTS; I love, love, love Christmas decorations and Christmas lights. I love going out at night to find the best decorated house. My favorite house, accompanied by it's own Christmas radio station and lights that move to the beat of the songs, was shown to me by my mother. We have gone and appreciated their efforts each year. (Except this one. *sad face*) I look forward to one day decorating my own house and reflecting on all of the mental notes I've made of things I think are pleasing to the eye.

The treats... each year my Grandma "Cookie," my mom, my brother and I make Christmas cookies and Pfeffernüsse (German spice cookie) cookies. My Grandma "P," makes 11 different types of cookies; for herself and my grandpa, for my dad, brother and myself, for various families at our church, for our minister and his family, etc. Everyone looks forward to her holiday assortment of favorites.

The tree... I love Christmas trees. I love the assortment of ornaments that have been collected my entire life. I love sitting by the tree and watching Christmas movies, drinking hot chocolate. I love how warm a tree can make the room.

The food... an extremely long tradition in my family is to have lasagna on Christmas eve. I don't have any clue as to why or how it started but I don't plan on breaking this tradition.

The presents... my favorite presents to give and the presents that seem to be the most well-recieved are the ones that are home-made. I love taking time to make things that I know will end up meaning more than something that I could buy at the store. Plus, then I know that there's no chance of someone getting the same gift.

The music... Christmas music is the best music. Last year, I didn't listen to hardly any music. I don't know what happened, but this year the music is in full swing. I only listen to the classics. No offense, but the revamped songs that came out this year are not my cup of tea.

The love... I know that I am extremely lucky. That's not to say that I have no hardships, but I have so many people who genuinely love and care about me and that's so incredible. My friends and family are so accepting and understanding and forgiving and grateful for me. Specifically in the times when I am undeserving. What more could you ask for?

I ask that you reflect on this season and find some of your favorite things about it.

Merry Christmas!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
