Out of all of the people in this world to offer up approval, a father’s means the most. And if your dad is anything like mine, he may not be the best at verbally expressing his admiration. There’s something about being a manly man that discourages the mushy gushy stuff. Because of this, I find his gentle embraces to be a firm display of his warm approval.
Let’s face it, we girls all grow up admiring our dad. As a two-year-old, he’s the comfiest pillow. As a six-year-old, he’s the world’s best playmate. And as a 13-year-old, he’s the guy you want your boyfriend to be like. But at 15, when that boy turns out to be the complete opposite, your dad is there to wipe away the tears. Or at 18, when your stubborn self convinces you a bad boy is “the one,” he’s there to scare that very boy off.
A dad is a model of strength and confidence. So much of who I am today has stemmed from my father. He’s been around since day one—helping me, teaching me, and molding me to be the daughter he is proud of. Because he isn’t the best at verbal praises, his hugs mean the world. They show me that no matter what, I will always be good enough for him.
And when the world feels like too much for me to handle, my dad is right there to offer up a squeeze of encouragement. His belief and faith in me drives me to be the best person I can be. Whether that’s in academics, athletics or everyday life, he is always pushing me to give my all. He has been there for me through the ups and downs, tears and triumphs, and amazingly enough, his belief in me hasn’t waivered.
Through his embraces, I can feel the softness of his heart, no matter how tightly his arms encompass me. I’m blessed with a father whose love is unfailing, kindness is unmatched and whose actions speak louder than words.
A dad is never too manly for a hug, and for that, I’m thankful.
