To Those Who Fat-Shame On Social Media

I have a few things to say to you, bud.

We always see pictures of people—typically girls, if we're being honest—who have fat or chub on their body. They're posted on instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and any number of social media platforms. These pictures always come with some kind of comment: offensive, rude, from a guy with a sh*t-eating grin and a shirtless profile picture from the gym. When they're called out on their rudeness, it's always met with, "I just care about fat peoples' health!"

Well, to be blunt—no you don't, asshole.

Firstly, how do you know this specific person's health predicament? You probably just found them in a #BodyPositivity tag and decided to go after them. You probably don't even know them, because most decent people wouldn't say that kind of thing to their friends. So, if we're just assuming you don't know them (because the chances are you do not), why do you think you know anything about their health? Are you their doctor? Their parent? Even, maybe, a close friend? No? Then obviously, you don't know what's going on in that beautiful body of theirs.

Secondly, if you "care" about this person, why are you attacking them? If I care about someone, usually I talk to them politely when a problem arises. I don't leave nasty, troll-like comments on their social media. I don't verbally abuse them. I don't cyberbully them. So, why are you? Is it because, maybe, you don't actually care?

Thirdly, people of all parts of the health spectrum have different body types and weights. Some people are extremely healthy but are larger. Some people are extremely thin but are superbly unhealthy. It's 2017, it's time we realized body =/= health. It can, of course, but it doesn't have to. You can weigh 200 pounds and as long as your doctor says you're good to go, well, most of us would think you're good to go.

Lastly—why do you CARE? Like, why did you take time out of your day to insult someone? Is it furthering your life in any way? Do you enjoy hurting people? Yes, free speech and the First Amendment, blah blah blah. Those rights only protect you from the government punishing you for those things. Society can tear into you as much as you want.

And if you're going to be a total d*ck-wad about someone's body just because it doesn't fit your personal preferences, you totally deserve it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
