It’s called a common thread because it’s similar throughout everyone. The thread. It lies on everyone, almost everything. So why when I say I am a fashion major does everyone give me the same response?
“Wow that’s so fun.”
This phrase, taken out of context, is honestly a compliment. But that’s not how they mean it. They mean it to say that my major is less than theirs. That I don’t put the same amount of effort into my school work as they do into theirs. That my major doesn't contribute to society as much as theirs. And that simply isn't true. That's never the response when a student says their major is chemistry or engineering or nursing. But why not? Shouldn't you be having fun in the major of your choice?
There are many majors that are, in fact, proven to be the hardest, I understand that. I am not here trying to convince you that I am god and I work the hardest to learn the hardest material. I know, in comparison to my peers, that I do not. But we, as fashion majors, do not get the credit we deserve. We work hard. We take accounting, finance, and chemistry. These are arguably hard classes for the average college student. Classes that need to be taken for arguably hard majors. However, difficulty of classes and majors is subjective so who are you to judge? But that’s not even the point.
The point is that I am passionate and I work hard towards the career of my dreams. Just like you. So don’t demean my major because you think it’s “easier.” Any major you love and are interested in is going to be easy for you. Everyone's brains work differently. Some students are left brained versus right. Artistic versus scientific. Creative versus structured. No two brains work the same. No two brains are passionate about the same exact topics. Walk in my shoes and tell me it’s easy. You can’t. And I can’t tell you yours is easy either.
Fashion is important. Fashion is relevant. Fashion is the past, present, and future.
A professor once asked my class, "do you know the one industry that will never be destroyed?"
You guessed it, it’s the fashion industry.
It’s the common thread between us all. Whatever your culture, race, gender, age you will always wear clothes. You’ll always have your style. You’ll always have a constant way of self-expression. It transcends to everyone. It's changing. It's ever moving. It's evolutionary.
So my major is my life. It’s my passion. So the next time you say “wow that’s so fun” think about what you’re actually saying.
Because my answer is going to be “hell yea it is, isn't yours?”
