Farewell To My Freshman Year

It all happened in a blink of an eye.

Farewell To My Freshman Year
Sharlene Paolino

As one door closes, another one opens. And as we pack up our things to go back to our hometowns for the summer I would like to just reflect on a few things. A lot has happened in a year and this is why freshmen year will forever be remembered. It was a big year for all of us because it was the first step of adulthood and being away from what we called home for 18 years. Some of us were indeed scared, and some of us were just anxious to get out of that small town, hungry for a change.

We all learned to get out of our comfort zone and become independent because college is no joke when it comes to that. In college you also meet the type friends that will last a lifetime, I know I did and I am beyond blessed. But certainly...

1. I survived my first year away from home.

After I graduated high school, I was one of those students that was just anxious to get out. But who would've thought that after one week in college, I was feeling a little bit homesick because college was a big eye opener for me. What was then done for you was now something you have to do all on your own. And I admit that was a bit difficult. But this year came and went in a blink of an eye and I must say that I survived my first year of college. I made a little home away from home in college that's making me dread coming back home for the summer.

2. No more school work...for now.

It feels nice to not think about deadlines, exams, lab quizzes, and study sessions for once. Although this isn't a goodbye forever, I think it's best to take a break from each other.

3. Cafe food, I wont miss you.

Nothing can honestly beat those home-cooked meals that we once took advantage of.

4. Mental breakdowns.

We've all been there. We all stay up whining about all the things we have to get done but those Facebook videos and tweets on Twitter from your fellow classmates struggling with you seems more interesting right now.

5. Summer = those long-missed beach days.

Being a deep down jersey girl, we all miss those days where we just lay back, relax, and getting some sun.

6. You now have responsibilities.

Being away from home just means you're responsible for everything on your own. From doing your own laundry, to managing your time to do school work, and still get enough time to sleep. It's a wake up call, but we've learned to manage so we deserve a pat on the back.

7. We learn how to deal with different types of people.

Whether it be a professor, or a fellow student that's a group member. Either way they both test your patience level.

8. College friends will last a lifetime.

I guarantee the friends that you meet in college will last a lifetime. Because they're the type of friends who really accept you for who you are. Chances are these friends will most likely be present in your bridal party one day. I just know that my friends now are one of a kind and I honestly don't what how I would've survived college without them.

Now that we've wrapped things up, it's important to keep in mind that we did it. And that we should be proud of the fact that we actually managed to be little adults. We've made mistakes throughout the year and we've learned from them, so don't you dare regret one thing. This school year was a blast and I cannot wait for the following year to unfold.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
