A Farewell Letter To My Squad

College just won't be the same without you.

A Farewell Letter To My Squad
Jessie Steele

While we all wish we could have a never-ending summer, it’s time to face the inevitable and prepare to head back to school for the upcoming fall semester. For many incoming college freshmen like myself, this will be a semester full of new beginnings. Moving off to college is definitely exciting, but it is also the time to say goodbye to the familiarity of everything you know, like routine hangouts with your best friends. When you sit down and think about all of the memories with your friends you’ll be leaving behind, you almost start to have second thoughts about leaving. While it’s an exciting time, it’s also bittersweet. To my current squad, this is for you:

Thanks for always laughing at my jokes. It's gonna be tough to find someone that gets me the way you do.

Thanks for all the long drives, and the many jam sessions that came with them. While we all may not see eye to eye when it comes to our tastes in music, at least we all have a strong appreciation for classics like “Where is the Love” and “Fergalicious.”

Thanks for agreeing to go out to dinner at nice restaurants even when we all had little to no money to spend on food. It probably wasn’t necessary, but I don’t regret anything.

Speaking of food, thanks for sharing the endless amounts of cookie cakes and ices with me. There was nothing like going to the grocery store bakery with you all and getting a cookie cake for no real occasion. It’s a great combination that I am sure going to miss.

Thanks for watching all of those horrible Lifetime movies with me. I’ll never understand why we enjoyed those movies so much, but we always got a good laugh (and then agreed to never watch them again).

Thanks for all the trips we took to Target even when none of us needed anything more than a random trip to Target. Let’s face it, college just won’t be the same without regular visits to our local Target.

While being several hours apart from each other is going to be tough, I hope each of you finds a new squad that is (almost) as good as ours. I hope you find someone to go to Steak ’n Shake with you and order chicken tenders at any hour of the day. I hope your new friends have the great sense of humor that we do, and I hope you find yourself in a group chat that you laugh at endlessly, while you still laugh at our group chat of course. I hope you make new inside jokes, but don’t forget about ours. I hope you guys have the best college experience ever, but save some of the fun for the weekends when we all reunite. Remember, this isn’t goodbye, it’s just ‘see you as soon as we can all afford the trip to come visit each other’.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
