FAQ: Sorority Recruitment Edition

I have been asked countless questions about my letters, the Greek community, and myself in general. Here’s a list of the most frequently asked questions that I have encountered and answered.

Often questions about Greek life seem shallow, however my sorority is anything but shallow. Our bonds run deep in tradition, which is not to be taken for granted.

Enjoy!

1. Q) Doesn’t being in a sorority mean you pay for friends?

A) Nope! No one pays for friends, we do pay our dues, but that money goes towards opportunities and maintaining our establishment nationally and on campus. Some opportunities that dues go toward include: formals, philanthropies, and sisterhood events. At such events, you can make friends and bond with people, but your money doesn’t go towards finding friends directly by any means.

2. Q) Do you have any other friends besides your sorority sisters?

A) Yes, yes I do. Being a sister in a sorority does not dictate who someone can and cannot hang out with. Additionally, members are often involved in many other organizations on campus and in classes where meeting people is easy outside of Greek life.

3. Q) Are you rich because you’re in Greek life?

A) One does not automatically mean the other. Besides, most houses have payment plans available for members who need more help with paying their dues. Many of my sisters pay their own way throughout college by working part time.

4. Q) Isn’t recruitment completely superficial?

A) Nope. I made some of my closet friends who later became my roommates during recruitment. Sorority recruitment isn’t all about wearing pretty dresses and speed dating between actives and potential new members (PNMs), rather it’s an opportunity to genuinely connect with people if you put yourself out there.

5. Q) Do you only wear your letters, Lilly Pulitzer, Tiffany & Co. jewelry, and Michael Kors watches?

A) False. I like to branch out with my brands. Just because a lot of sororities are stereotyped into these brands doesn’t mean that’s all they wear or even that they own any of that stuff at all. Not every member is the same, so their apparel tastes won’t be either.

6.  Q) Is Big/ Little love real?

A) Yes, in my case it is. I was lucky, however it doesn’t always turn out that way. Every Big/Little pairing is unique, but most make it work.

7. Q) Does Greek life do anything besides party?

A) Yes, much more. Philanthropy is a greater part of the Greek life than any party.

8. Q) Are Greeks even smart?

A) Indeed they are,  I do believe everyone at this university got in fair and square. Besides just look at the Greek women’s average GPA, which is higher than the overall school’s average woman student’s GPA at UC Davis. Two words: study hours.

9. Q) Why so much glitter?

A) Good question, I have no clue.

10. Q) Why did you go Greek?

A) For many reasons, none of which I regret even with countless questions like these.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
