As I was walking home from VCU's campus today I realized how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place as The Fan. If you don't already know, The Fan got its name because the shape of the streets that extend from West Belvidere Street to Boulevard resemble an actual fan. There is no doubt that The Fan looks its best during the fall season. The beautiful colors of the changing leaves highlight the unique colors of the different houses and businesses in the neighborhood. It is so picturesque to see VCU students walking around in their sweaters and scarves with the fallen leaves surrounding their feet.
In the spring, the same trees that lost the leaves to make a beautiful fall landscape blossom and create the most beautiful colors. There is no doubt that The Fan knows how to show off Virginia's four seasons.
Instead of a typical city landscape, The Fan is made up of mostly small buildings and houses that age up to about 100 years old. It is an amazing feeling living in a building that was built in 1910 and being surrounded by buildings that are just as old.
The Fan is primarily residential, and is a popular place for VCU students to live. The neat thing about being a college student and living in The Fan is that there is a diverse age range of people. Not everyone you come across is a student. Around my apartment, there are families and there are elderly people who own beautiful homes. There are countless parks and playgrounds where families and college students can hang out. It is refreshing living in a place that is not primarily college students because it shows me what the real world is like.
The Fan district is also very well known for its locally owned shops and restaurants. The shops are unique in their own way. A plus about living in The Fan is that a lot of these local places are within walking distance.
