My First Ever Family Weekend At Ithaca College

Ithaca College family weekend took a pit stop in Syracuse.

It’s weird spending three years living with one other person, and then suddenly living with 19 teenage girls. Being a college freshman is hard work, and I’ve missed my mom more than she can understand. This weekend she came to visit me for Ithaca College's Family Weekend, and I couldn't have been more excited to spend a beautiful few days with my favorite person in the entire world.

When I spoke with my mom about Family Weekend, we realized we had missed the deadline to sign her up for the multitude of events IC had to offer, but we didn’t let that slow us down. I got us tickets to see "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and even an acapella concert.

Friday: My mom arrived, and we went to get dinner at this tapas restaurant, Just A Taste (10/10 would recommend). Rocky Horror was playing at 9:00, and we knew that there would be shadow casting, but boy were we in for a surprise. When we got there, people were asking us if we wanted to take our clothes off because the room would get hot. Neither of us took off our clothes — well, not all of our clothes. I ended up taking my boots off. Because it was my first time at a shadow casting, I was marked with a red “V” on my forehead, the sign of virginity. Then, the Virgin Games started and that’s where the night really took a turn. But if you’d really like to know more about that you can talk to me personally; this may not be the best place to tell all of you how I had to switch clothes with a male in front of 70-some-odd strangers. Whoops.

Saturday: My mom had told me she wanted to go for a ride, what that meant I had no clue. But when I got in the car she had directions all set up, and I jokingly asked if we were going to Syracuse or something like that. To my surprise, she said yes! We were indeed going to spend the afternoon in Syracuse, and we were planning to meet my sister’s good friend for lunch. I was so excited. Before we settled down at the restaurant, I went to the bathroom, and when I came back my mom had switched tables (which was odd, but I didn’t question it). Then my sister’s three friends walked in with my sister in tow. For those of you who don’t know, my sister goes to Florida State University, and I haven’t seen since August 18. I was so happy to see her even if it was for just under two hours. The next time I see her will be December 16, and we’ll be on our way to see Kanye West. We (my mother and I) then went back to Ithaca just in time to catch dinner with my roommate, her sister and her mother. Two of IC’s acapella groups were performing, and we had a great time jamming out to the songs I knew the words to (and she didn’t). But all in all, another great day.

Sunday: We brought my friend out to breakfast and then ventured to CVS and back up to campus to say our goodbyes. Or at least bye for twelve more days. Thank you to everyone who made this weekend incredible and unforgettable. Only more time could have made it even better.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
