Family Matters

Don't ignore the calls from the people who have helped you make it this far.

Family Matters

Everyone knows that in college it can be hard to keep up with your family back at home. It's hard to talk to them every day, text them all the time and tell them about the “funniest thing ever" that happened last night because, well, they just had to be there. It can be hard to keep your mom up to date with any -- or all -- of the guys in your life, because those types of situations are so complicated in college and totally different from high school.

It's hard to not see her every morning and start the day off with her because you're almost 200 miles apart. It's hard to keep up with your dad because your favorite things to do with him is eat food, work outside, help him with an occasional building project and make the stupidest jokes with him. It's hard to keep up with your brother because you can't go to the gym with him anymore or yell at him for playing the music too loudly or driving too fast. You can't do these things over the phone, so take the time to just talk to them instead.

It's hard to keep in touch with all of these people despite the fact that you wouldn't be anywhere without them. These people made you who you are today, so don't forget about them in college. They want to know what's going on in your life, so answer their call even though you aren't home to do your favorite things with them.

Also, don't forget about your other relatives. Send them pictures when they ask you for them. Email them back. Call them. Text them. Accept their invitation out to lunch when they're in town, even though you have a ton of homework, and you really need to start studying for the class that you haven't been to in weeks.

It's important to take a step back and look at what really matters. Yes, grades and friends matter. But family? They've made more sacrifices for you than you know and will always be there for you. So call them right now, without any other reason than to just say “hi."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
