This value was instilled in me at an early age. My hometown instilled this value in me. Through playing sports, this value was instilled in me. Besides your walk with God, this value is to always make family your top priority. It is the most valuable thing a human can possess. Family is the most important thing in life.
Family consists of those who are close friends, open arms to run towards, a shoulder to lean on, and an abundance of everlasting love. When you are on your own, you look to the examples they set for you to be your guide. They are your support system and biggest fans. The beauty of a family is that not all members of it are blood related. To me, some family members are close friends, coaches, and mentors. It is an amazing thought to think of all the people in your family, and how many aren't even related to you.
Through playing sports, I realized that you make new brothers. You make your family grow bigger. You learn how to be reliable. You learn how to run on fumes for your brother when adversity strikes, even though there is no gas left in your tank. You learn how to protect and sacrifice so that the rest can be taken care of. All the things I have learned in sports have transferred over to being a son, grandson, brother, nephew, etc.
I feel that it is essential to always tell the people in your family how much you love and appreciate them. Also, to always spend time with them over anything else. The best things in life are free, like family. Despite how hectic life gets, always make time for family. Throughout my life, I will always continue to keep family first. I am so blessed to have the family that I do, and the impact they all have had on me. If I have no shoes on my feet, no food to eat, but yet my family is happy and taken care of then, I will be a happy man.
"A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man."
