If you type in “fall fashion” to Google, you’re bound to get a lot of hits, some relevant, and some slightly less so. For the majority, however, there will be photos of beyond gorgeous runway models wearing outlandish outfits that only the bravest of souls would wear, not to mention the disregard for actual conditions, whether it be the temperature outside or the AC inside the classroom.
So when you really think about it, what is fall fashion for the average student? It is certainly not giant fur coats or dresses decked out with diamonds, rubies, and pearls. Some of the cutest trends on the fall 2015 runway can be applied practically to the limited wardrobe room and meager clothing budget college students have.
- Big Jewelry--So maybe it’s not in the budget to be spending thousands of dollars for dangly diamond earrings or a statement necklace made of real precious stones, but there are ways to still take advantage of the trend. If you go to a thrift shop, Claire’s, or maybe in your mom’s closet when you go home for break, you’re bound to find some cheap costume jewelry--for example, a chunky necklace to pair with that rad turtleneck or long dangly earrings to highlight your bare neck when you’re rocking the messy bun.
- High-Heeled Loafers- Literally any thrift shop will have these totally retro shoes that are making a huge comeback. Sometimes when it comes to style, name-brand doesn’t mean a thing, especially when you’re just going to throw them in a pile with all the rest of your shoes. You can pair these fun, school appropriate alternatives to stilettos with just about any hip outfit; for instance, with some solid colored palazzo pants, a cropped top and a long sweater, or with a pleated skirt, a collared blouse, and tights to stay warm.
- Big Black Boots--Most of the people here have been aware and taking advantage of this big black boot trend for some time now, but if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, it isn’t too late. Although you may not be able to find them in thrift stores yet due to their popularity, stores such as Forever 21, H&M, and Payless Shoes will be able to fill your desire. However, the practicality and durability of shoes such as Doc Martens or TImberland boots may persuade you to make an investment in a more expensive, but higher quality pair of boots. Also consider the fact that the grunge trend spilling over from last fall doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and that these shoes will most likely be in style for many seasons to come.
- Higher High-Waisted--Up until recently, our concept of high-waisted has been belly-button height shorts and skirts, but that doesn’t have to be the case anymore. High waisted has risen up to the actual waist, so time to hit the thrift shop and seek out those mom jeans--they’re in style now! They can really work with anything tucked in, and bonus points if your pants are cuffed… it creates interesting lines and aesthetics if worn with confidence.
These are just a few trends out there right now, but there are certainly tons of hip looks this season to check out and try out… who knows, you might find your true calling in the fashion world. None of these floating your boat? No worries. Anything worn with confidence is an outfit worn right.
Happy Fall!
