Fall is the beautiful time of year where the stale, hot, holiday-lacking months of summer come to an end, and the time for every great thing us middle-classers have to look forward to.
The first and most obvious one, is FOOTBALL! Whether it’s colligate or professional, it’s the weekly game; nay, experience, that gets us through the school or work week. Even though wearing a $200 jersey all day and making chip dip is exciting in it’s own right, its that one game a season that you save up for month’s for; travel a couple hours with a car full of friends and getting overpriced nachos while experiencing the kind of unity between strangers that is found almost nowhere else. Even for those like me, who could name more Nutella recipes than players on his favorite team, the whole experience just screams fall, fun, and lasting memories.
Next up, is something I like to call the Quell. All summer, we have to deal with terrible hardships like bees, mosquitoes, sweaty bodies, dehydration, and worst of all: Boredom. All there is to do is work and complain about working. But once Autumn comes ‘round, all that heat and boredom flushes out completely, but not extremely. It’s like burning your hand on a hot stove, and smothering it in a cool, soothing lotion that smells like pumpkin spice. Suddenly, the long-awaited mediator between extreme hot and extreme cold is here, and there’s so much to do and enjoy, you forget to complain about work.
And lastly, most importantly, are the holidays. You know the two: Halloween and Thanksgiving.
First, lets look at Halloween: Scary movies you can invite dates to, carving jack-o-lanterns and baking the remaining seeds, and the most important of all: Tons. Of. Candy. Whether you’re a little kid receiving it, or an adult handing it out, there are always leftovers and always a ton of joy for both parties. Next is Thanksgiving, the holiday just as exclusively American as the 4th of July. For the men, this means, you guessed it, more football and food, carving the turkey, being reminded on how lucky we are to have a family, and a fantastic food coma to follow.
For the Women, it is a time to flex their culinary muscles in preparing dinner, coercing their sons and husbands to help out, reconnect with family that seems to get way from all of us in our busy lives, and the aforementioned food coma as well. Now, the downside to Thanksgiving is that it marks the end of fall. Now the snowy weather comes for those of us up North, and the commercials for Christmas deals are up everywhere and leftover turkey and stuffing is made into paninis. Nevertheless, it is an amazing cap to an amazing season, one to be enjoyed and cherished.
For even though there are 2 more amazing months before the next Autumn, there’s is one more hot gross, long Summer. C
