In today's society, it seems as if everyone is glued to a screen. Whether it is their phone, laptop/desktop, or tablet, people seem to be attached to these screens and use them to talk to other individuals instead of being around people. Nowadays most people seem to be introverted and the type of environment that many find themselves in makes it only easier to be an introvert. All the time spent in front of screens doesn't allow individuals to learn conversational skills and makes one fall in love with their own company instead of that with others. Don't take it personally if you're an extrovert or an ambivert like myself. Instead, here are some ways to make it through this introverted way.
1. Respect people's need for privacy.
Everyone needs their alone time, but introverts need more time alone and that's okay. Give the introverts in your life more alone time than others. It's not because they don't like hanging out with you, it's just draining and recharging batteries takes time.
2. Don't only talk on the phone.
Try to have as much face-to-face contact as possible. This way, the introvert has more experience with talking to people and it's a great way to further bond with someone. You also get your chance to talk to people. Of course, they may not want to talk for as long as you do, but still-- It's a win-win situation.
3. Stick with the small talk.
People have a hard time opening up to people and introverts do not have it any easier. Try and stick to small talk at first. It will allow them to warm up to you, even if you want to tell them your entire life story within minutes. It not only makes them warm up to you, but also makes awkward silences a thing of the past.
4. Allow time for brainstorming.
Introverts need time to make a decision sometimes, so don't dare asking them hours before an event (unless you know that they'd be okay with it). Introverts like to plan their days and make sure everything they do is productive. Also, they want to include as much free time for themselves as much as they can.
5. They'll just like you
Everyone needs their alone time, and no two introverts are alike. Take some time to get to know the introverts in your life and that way you will know what to do to make both them and you feel comfortable in any situation.
Take these into consideration the next time you step away from your screens and into the 'real world.'
