Experiencing Bid Day as a Non-Greek

So. Much. Screaming.

So this year I went to Wingate's Bid Day. "Oh my God, Ashley! What sorority did you join?!" NO. I went to Bid Day to support two of my roommates. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. Here's a list of things that I experienced on Bid Day at Wingate.

1. SO. MUCH. SCREAMING.

I didn't know that people had that much lung capacity, and I'm a singer! Don't know if that was the best vocal health I'd ever heard, but they seemed happy.

2. SO. MUCH. GLITTER.

I love glitter, but holy glitter god there was endless glitter on this day. I think I might still have some left in my lungs.

3. Everybody ran everywhere.

The new girls ran to their new sororities. The sororities ran to their new girls. The Pi Chi girls (the girls that disassociate from their sororities to lead the new girls to their new homes) ran back to their sororities. There was SO. MUCH. RUNNING.

4. Crying.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the crying. I'm not Greek, so maybe I don't understand how deep the sisterhood runs. But so many people were crying. So. Many.

5. Chanting.

For a moment, I couldn't remember if I was at Bid Day or at some weird cult meeting. There was so much chanting and as someone who isn't Greek and doesn't plan on becoming Greek anytime soon, it was creepy. The even creepier part is that I remember some of them and I can't get them out of my head. "C-H-I-O-M-E-G-A! YOU WISH YOU WERE ONE TOO!" Crap...

6. So much love.

Even through all the craziness and my sensory overload exploding out of my ears, there was so much love and that was evident. My roommates couldn't have been happier to be Chi Omega's together and were running in and out of the apartment talking about how happy they were. Even though it all freaked me out, I could tell that everybody involved was super happy, and at the end of the day, that's what matters.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
