Personally, 2017 was a...lot. There were exciting moments – for one, I graduated. Then there were terrifying moments – any time Trump did anything and CNN sent me an update on it. Safe to say, by the time Christmas rolled around, I was more than ready to take an extremely long nap and forget that 2017 was even a thing.

This being said, I am determined to be more optimistic about 2018. It may not be the “best” year, but I’ll be damned if it is going to make me as emotionally and mentally exhausted as 2017.

To get myself more excited about the upcoming year, I’ve done some research, and found some events occurring in 2018 that are sure to get us all rowdy and motivated. Here are 10 of the most exciting things happening in 2018:

1. The 2018 Winter Olympics

I am terrible at sports, but that doesn't mean I'm not excited to watch people skate around in sparkly outfits. (I am also aware that there is more to the Olympics than just figure skating, and I am excited about it, but I am most excited for the figure skating.)

2. “Ocean’s Eight” is coming out

There are people who are not excited about this. I do not, under any circumstances, understand their mindset. At all.

3. The (Second) Royal Wedding

If someone asked me why I was excited about this wedding, I could not tell them. I should not, for any logical reason, care at all. Yet, here I am, excited for the marriage of two people that, if I decide to watch the wedding, will have to watch from a computer screen, late at night, all by myself, an ocean away.

4. Movies in general

“Black Panther” comes out in February, and after that, it’s just non-stop good movie after good movie. For example, the second “Incredibles” movie is set to come out this year, and there is nothing my 10-year-old self wants more than to glue myself to a movie theater seat and watch it 14 times in a row.

5. Really exciting historical anniversaries

If you’re like me and find history really interesting, there are some really cool anniversaries that are coming up this year. For example, 2018 will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, and the 50th anniversary of the of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which is timely for a variety of reasons.

6. The SpaceX launch is happening

So, Elon Musk – crazy billionaire with too much time on his hands – decided to send two civilians into space and it's happening this year. This is both exciting and terrifying for me. Exciting, because actual civilians will be able to see the moon without being astronauts, and terrifying because space in general just terrifies me.

7. The Midterm elections

I’m not sure if this should really be classified as “exciting” per say. Regardless, it’s still something massive that is happening in 2018, and it’s a good time for you to exercise your right as an American to go vote.

8. Nintendo will probably release something new having to do with “Zelda”

This might not be exciting for a lot of people, but I grew up with “Zelda” and “Breath of the Wild” was arguably one of the greatest games to have ever existed in the universe. While “Breath of the Wild” was supposed to be the last game in the “Zelda” franchise, there were a lot of invisible walls and weird land masses that looked like they needed to be explored but couldn’t be, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo rolled out a new game or some DLC in this franchise in 2018.

9. The "Handmaid’s Tale" – Season 2

This is one of the few book-to-movie/TV series adaptations that I liked, and needless to say, I am both nervous and excited about season 2.

10. Scalp cooling for chemo patients

Basically, the FDA approved of a thing last year – a cooling cap that chemo patients wear before, during, and after chemotherapy – and it could reduce the likelihood of hair loss. This isn’t necessarily exciting for me, because I do not have cancer nor do I currently know anyone with cancer. Yet, the idea that this could help millions of people not have to deal with something like losing their hair while also having to deal with the havoc that chemo wrecks on a body is still something to be excited about.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
