Let's All Stop And Agree That Pie Is The Best Thing To Happen To This World

Finding something that everyone can agree on isn’t always the easiest thing in the world... but I know what this common denominator is.

Between devastating events and situations happening around the world — North Korea, Venezuela, Trump, The Islamic State, and Hurricane Harvey, for example — I think it's important to remember good things every now and then. Nothing big, just somethings that nearly everyone can agree on and appreciate in their own way.

But finding something that everyone can agree on isn’t always the easiest thing in the world. Between conflicts between personal views and an overall indecisiveness that plagues our world, finding a common denominator is a tough thing.

Even still, I know what one of these common denominators are...

Pie.

Gah, I’m only 100 words into this 500-word article and I’m already hungry. This is going to be hard.

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you, but pies aren’t always just filled with tasty, tasty fruit. Between pot pies, meat pies, pi, fruit pies, cream pies, and cheese pies, I really feel like there is some kind of pie out there for anyone. And if for some reason one of those didn’t catch your fancy, don’t worry as that list doesn’t come close to completing the entirety of pies. Just a few other types would be tarts and flans, which while are not our traditional idea of pie, still essentially are a pie at heart.

According to the PieCouncil.org (which is the most credible web-based pie source I could find), pie has been around since the Egyptians—that’s sometime between 300 and 3,000 BC. That was a long time ago, and I’m guessing their pies were not as tasty as the pies we have now, as we don’t know exactly what their pies consisted of.

But we do know that pies passed from Egypt, to classical Greece, and then to the Romans, which is where we get the earliest known recipe for a pie. The Romans published a recipe of rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie.

I guess that’s what it might have looked liked. Not awful looking, but I must say, if you put that down in front of me alongside, say, a strawberry-rhubarb pie… there would be no contest. But nonetheless, I would try a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie any day!

Now that we have reinforced pies aren’t a modern invention, we must celebrate and educate people about pies of the world!

If you’re looking to try something different for dinner how about a savory Bobotie pie from South Africa, or fishy Coulibiac pie from Russia?! Need an on-the-go lunch? A Jamaican Meat pie is a hand-size pie that is sure to satisfy. And for dessert? The list is quite possibly endless. Here’s a list of seven amazing dessert pies that I wholeheartedly agree with. Sour cherry has got to be one of my favorite pies.

After all this, I’m really wondering why I didn’t save this article for National Pie day (January 23rd), or even National Pi Day (March 14th)… Oh well. It’s good to start planning ahead of time for these kind of things... right?

If it wasn’t obvious, the answer is yes.

Last thought! Can we all just stop and agree that pie is amazing?

Thanks.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
