Mental health, anxiety, depression, suicide and racism. If the thought of talking about these topics with other people make you uncomfortable, then congrats, you're a normal person. No one wants to talk about these things, except one person.
Logic.
Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, better known as Logic, has become an inspiration for our generation. He is an up and coming rapper and songwriter who has used his platform to bring to light these heavy topics that need to be talked about. Coming from a broken home, he was raised by his white mother and left by his black dad. He dealt with many of these issues first hand growing up as a mixed male, confused as to what is considered "normal" and what is not.
His latest album titled Everybody takes you on a journey throughout each song. Every tune is told from the perspective of someone dealing with one of these problems that are frankly uncomfortable for most people to talk about.
Many young people in particular are afraid to ask for help in fear that they will be labeled "weird" or "different". In reality, everybody is weird and different. Everybody has something going on internally, even if they don't broadcast it.
This Maryland native is breaking the stigma surrounding each of these social and personal issues in hopes of helping someone who may feel the same way.
His hit single 1-800-273-8255, which is the number for the suicide hotline, is told from the perspective of someone who is dealing with suicidal thoughts. The music video will not only give you instant goosebumps, but it shows that if you are feeling scared or embarrassed for that way you are or the way you're feeling, you are certainly not alone. The impact this song has made on society is extraordinary. Since it was released, the number of times the suicide hotline has been called increased by 50%.
Logic is actually changing lives through his art.
Part of Logic's message in this album is that the mind is a powerful machine that has the ability to make you feel physically sick just from thoughts. In his song Anziety, this message is proclaimed to those who doubt the power of their mind and also to those who tell you to "get over it" or "you can control it". The truth is, you can't. You can't control what your mind thinks and how you feel. All you can do is accept it and ask for help. There are so many more people than you think who have the exact same things going on.
As someone who has dealt with some of these issues in the past, it's empowering to know that someone is speaking up for those who feel like they're alone. Mental health is more important than ever, so talk about it. Asking for help is not weak, it's one of the strongest things you can do. Everybody is struggling with something and Logic has spun hip-hop on it's head to spread this message.
