I'm not a psychology major or a psychology expert, nor am I claiming to be. I've taken a freshman psychology class before and I have taken a few more psychology classes since. I just believe that every freshmen in college should take a psychology class their freshman year of college. Psychology classes not only teach you valuable skills, it is interesting to learn certain reasons why people act the way they do. You end up learning many life skills that you wouldn't know any other way, such as how to memorize things the correct way to actually remember them. You learn about some disabilities that people have that start in the brain, and learn about sleep and how it effects the body.
Through psychology, I learned how the brain stores memory and what some affective ways to study are. I have learned that there are different types of memory and each type of memory is stored different. I have learned that it is affective to read the book before class so you know something about the topic before it is lectured about. You can remember information by doing rehearsal, which means going over things and understanding them. There are many more memory strategies that you can learn.
Another valuable skill is learning about different illnesses and disabilities. By learning about them, it is easier for you to spot someone who has an illness or disability. One disability that you can learn about is dementia. Dementia has certain characteristics and many different subtypes, by learning these you can start to realize when people have it or you can get empathy for people who have it. Other things you may learn about are Alzheimer's, autism, down syndrome, schizophrenia, and many more. You can see many possible symptoms and understand all the disabilities more.
The third useful psychology skill is sleep. In psychology, you learn how important sleep is. You can learn how it influences a persons life. You can learn about how many hours are necessary for a person to still be able to function. You also learn the side effects of what can happen if you don't get enough sleep.
Learning about memory, disabilities, and sleep are just three main topics that you learn in freshman psychology, and you will learn many more useful things. Psychology classes are very enjoyable and I think every freshman should take one to learn all the important skills.
