Having just concluded my first semester of freshman year, I do not yet know all of the secrets to a “successful” and “fun” first year of college; however, I do know a few things that got me through the rocky, yet amazing, first leg of the year.
1. The Freshman 15 is/is not real
If you’re like me, getting your lazy self up to go to the dining hall seems like a lot of effort (and therefore you have stayed the same weight).
2. Sleep is for the weak (and put together people)
Yoga pants, a flannel, and my flip flops might not say “hire me,” but they do say “I stayed up all night to finish this paper.”
3. All assignments must be turned in (on time!)
That one assignment you forgot to turn in because you skipped class? Yeah, it’s worth 30 percent of your grade.
4. The library is a great place to study and take naps
And the best part? Everyone does it, so you don’t even need to feel judged.
5. Missing college friends during break is the worst part of college
Every group text starts blowing up and suddenly you’re all like each other’s clingy ex-girlfriends.
6. Thoughts about transferring linger for about two months
But then you realize you could never leave your new best friends behind.
7. Homesickness will hit hardest during finals week
Give your mom a call; she’ll let you stress cry about the gross burrito you had today that has no relevance to your studies.
8. All the hard work is so worth it
And next semester will probably be even better.Whether you are a current freshman, a senior in high school, or a wise upperclassman, the first semester of college is a learning experience for everyone. But at the end of the day, all of those 20 page papers and 8 a.m. classes are worth it for the memories you come out with in the end.
