On April 22, 2016 women from Columbia, Mo. including some of Stephens' finest Susies graced the stage at Rock Bridge High School during the traditional event Hop Like a Que and Kopy Kappa. For these events, competing teams are formed of women from the community who create performances mimicking the signature moves of National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi, whose members are commonly known as the Ques and the Kappas. These organizations both have their trademarked moves, the Kappas with their seductive shimmying and the Ques with their energetic hopping, which words cannot truly describe. These performances are years-old traditions, but in 2016 they were combined into a single event for the first time ever. Both have been done for several years but Hop Like a Que was revived this year from its last occurrence in 2013.
This event is a community-wide favorite way to celebrate NPHC Greek life at Mizzou. While going through the process to enter Greek organizations is rigorous, everyone can appreciate the organizations' traditions whether or not they are Greek themselves. Several teams for both Hop Like a Que and Kopy Kappa featured Stephens women including Camille Gayden, Brianna Jackson and Parris Davis on the infamous 2 Live Qrew. Their lively hopping earned them second place in the Hop Like a Que portion of the event and the honor of winning the contest overall. The Kopy Kappa performance from this year can be viewed on YouTube, and is also extremely entertaining.
Perhaps my favorite moment as an audience member was upon one Kopy Kappa group exclaiming something to the effect of, "You better watch your girl because your girl be watching us!," was a mother in the audience clutching her heart and uttering, "That is MY child!" in stunned awe. Sometimes members of Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi are featured in their respective performances if planned by the teams and the coaches. One or two members of each organization practice with and teach the teams their moves as coaches. These performances always entertain though, because they have a mix of signature moves, organizational traditions, original combinations and seductive interactions. Overall, the event is not to be missed. When else can you see famous Susies like our former student government association president, Brianna Jackson, dance and tell gut-wrenching jokes? OK maybe that wasn't the best example...but you get the picture!
