Last week, a source of endless entertainment for many ASU students died.
The appsummer1 account on snapchat was one giant mystery. Who ran it? What did he or she do with all of the submissions? Why were there so many dicks? But one final mystery behind the account remains: Why did it get taken down?
Sure, genitalia was present. Very present. Sure, there were many questionably consensual, amateur, ten-second sex tapes posted as well. And don't even get me started on the "DP girl" saga. But appsummer1 was more than a public forum for desperate guys to emasculate, or invigorate, their fellow mountaineers. It was more than an easy tool for voyeurs to watch local strangers have better sex than them. And it was certainly more than a platform for sexually liberal girls to shove rather large objects inside of them.
The account became a common source of entertainment almost everyone in Boone could bond over. Complete strangers could talk about an eight-gram purple nugget they both saw or a disturbingly large collection of sex toys posted earlier in the day. Furthermore, all of these taboo conversations were perfectly okay to have.
Appsummer1 didn't just benefit the deviants and those entertained by their behavior either. Talented singers posted ten second performances and collaborated with each other. Artists showed off their work. A hiker could share the view at the top of a mountain with someone who just aced their accounting exam. The account united the campus.
Evidently, that didn't matter. The questionably consensual sex tapes and overabundance of phallic objects was too much to keep the account from getting shut down. No one except the infamous "admin" knows the specific reason why it was shut down. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Yik Yak is still around for anonymous public discussion. The internet has plenty of emasculating genitalia and questionably consensual sex tapes. Life goes on.
And lets be real, it'll be back next year.
