5 Ways To Escape Tallahassee On A Budget

If you're anything like me, then you're probably already wishing for Spring Break to hurry up and for schoolwork to disappear. Don't get me wrong, I love FSU, but a little getaway here and there is good for the soul and keeps the morale high. If you're also like me, then you're on a tight budget and can't afford expensive mini vacations whenever you so please. So grab a couple of your closest friends, chip-in for gas money, and explore the five best places to escape school without breaking the bank!

1. Providence Canyon State Park.

Georgia's "little grand canyon" is only a two and a half hour drive from campus and promises to take your breath away. With 10+ hiking trails, picnicking, campsites, and a great source of beautiful pictures, this road trip is sure to leave you refreshed. If amazing views of orange, red, and pink canyons weren't enough, you can make a quick trip to nearby Albany, Georgia for delicious food, great shopping, and endless outdoor adventures!

2. Jacksonville, Florida.

Jacksonville is one of Florida's most vibrant and welcoming cities and is only a two and a half hour drive from campus! With 22 miles of beaches, historic neighborhoods, world-class cuisine, and a lively nightlife, it is no winder why it was ranked on the list "10 Best Value Destinations for 2018" by Lonely Planet. You can make is a day trip or rent an Airbnb with a couple of friends for the mini vacation you all have been needing!

3. Alligator Point, Florida.

Located only an hour away, Alligator Point is a great destination is you're craving the beach. With eight miles of pristine coastline and the absence of loud noises and bright lights, Alligator Point is the perfect place if you're in need of some peace and quiet.

4. Thomasville, Georgia.

Take a fifty-minute drive to Thomasville, Georgia where you will be charmed with their dining experience, endless shopping, and historic attractions. If you're looking for a great place to serve as a beautiful background for photos, make sure to visit the Thomasville Rose Garden and Cherokee Lake Park where a variety of over 1,500 rose bushes bloom each Spring!

5. St. Mark's National Wildlife Refugee.

Located right on the Gulf of Mexico and only an hour away from campus, St. Mark's National Wildlife Refugee is a great place to take a break from the hustle of class and instead enjoy the natural beauty the Refugee has to offer. With countless photo opportunities, hiking trails, and beautiful creatures, this is a great destination when you're in need of peace.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
