My favorite quote of all time is, “You are entitled to nothing.” Those of you who have seen "The House of Cards" television show may be able to recollect this exquisite line from Frank Underwood’s speech. This one line, although many of us may not believe it, perfectly distinguishes the major flaws we millennials have today. Those flaws are entitlement and taking advantage of what opportunities we have been given by our forefathers. This view seems to be very frowned upon and that itself shows that us millennials are incapable of understanding the hard truth that the world will show us soon enough. We truly are entitled to nothing. All I see in my generation, not excluding myself, is talking about equality, respect, political correctness, and “birthrights,” so to speak. None of these things are something any of us are truly born with. Equality is a very important thing to have within a society and that may not be a problem by itself but the way this generation perceives equality is far from perfect. Equality stems from respect and that is something you must earn. I’ve seen videos and had first hand experiences with Trump rallies and protests. Most of these experiences were very eye-opening because of the sheer ignorance that came from, not the Trump side, but from the protesters side. Screaming profanities and insults at Trump supporters and then crying and complaining about being hit in the face.
This is no longer grade school. That punch in the face is 100 times less painful than the sucker punch life will throw at you if you act like a child. How can you protest views that you do not fully understand and are ignorant toward? Calling those who try to hear out the views of others ignorant without fully hearing their views. This concept of freedom to protest and freedom of speech is so misused by us that we fail to see that we are doing more harm than good by creating environments in which our fellow Americans are in harms way not by outside sources, but rather by ourselves. We are not entitled to these rights to speech, protest, voting, and deciding what we want to do with our lives. These things are opportunities provided by our forefathers. They have made mistakes, it is our job to fix them and learn from them. It is not our job to complain about them and only take action in the sense of being ignorant toward the views that contrast our own. These childish tendencies are the main reason our generation is the one with the most opportunity but possibly the least potential. So, if you learn one thing from reading this please let it be this; you are not entitled to anything, the world owes you nothing, and in fact you are the one who owes the world everything. Take every opportunity you have to better society for all and not only those with the same views are your own.
