What To Do If You've Got The End Of The Semester Blues

In the words of Taylor Swift, sometime's you've just got to "shake it off."

Guess who's made it to the end of the semester (for the most part)? That's right, it's you. You've made it so far, and you don't have much farther to go — except, you know, just a couple of exams... or work... or maybe a few more classes.

OK, so sort of a lot — and I know, that can be stressful. That can also give you a case of the good ole fashioned "end of the semester blues." Is that a real thing, or is it just something I made up? The world may never know, but either way, this time of year can be stressful. This time of year can easily get you down in the dumps.

With due dates piling up and stress coming at me from every corner, the past few days (and the next few weeks) have and could easily find me feeling just a little blue. However, it doesn't have to be that way, right?

In the words of Taylor Swift, sometime's you've just got to "shake it off." Call me crazy, but I think that can apply in this situation.

Hear me out. The end of the semester is wild. It's full of exams, papers, more exams, more papers, work, the list goes on, and that's just for me. I can't imagine what some people might be going through, or how bluesy it might make someone feel. So, when everything starts piling up, maybe try to take those words of T-Swizzle to heart and "shake it off."

I know that can be harder than it sounds, and I know sometimes it might sound impossible, but when the going gets tough, I think we owe it to ourselves to at least try. When those blues creep up on you, we've got to try to put them in their place, and tell them who's in charge — and that person in charge is you.

When it comes down to it, exams are just exams, and if you put in those hours, those late nights in the library, then you'll get through it. You'll do your best, and your best is always good enough. You're best is plenty enough, and no matter the grade, you can rest assured know that you gave your all, and in this case, that's all you need to do.

All of the struggles that the end of the semester brings are temporary, and we're all more than strong enough to get through them. Sometimes, or maybe even a lot of the time, we just have to remind ourselves of that. We have to remind ourselves how strong we are, try to "shake off" or work past all of our troubles, and do what we can to tell the end of the semester blues that we will be blue no more.

Plus, we always have the holidays to look forward too, right? Make it through the gloomiest part of the semester, and you can also rest assured knowing that there's a light at the end of that tunnel, whether it's a Christmas tree, a ball drop on New Year's Eve, or both.

The end of the semester is rough, but we're so close, and the blues aren't going to win. We are.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
