School breaks are wonderful. Whether it's a holiday or just a simple weekend at home, having a break from school is a necessity. We get to go home and see family, friends, and everyone in between. Our old math teachers we now see getting coffee and those kids that we talked to in that one class freshman year that we never truly got to know. It's good to see how people have grown and matured or, sadly, not matured. There is always one person you will never be fully prepared to see though...and that's your old crush. You see them from across the store and immediately start sweating or want to hide. It's been months or even years since you were slightly obsessed with them, but now it's all coming back to you. The feels hit you like a brick wall and you don't even remember what you're doing in the home goods section of Target, you just remember running into the closest aisle. Oh God, they say you...now what?
1. The nerves: You see them and they see you. Damn they look good since you last saw them, which was probably graduation.
2. Fear: Do you look good right now?? How do I say hi to them?? Do they even remember how I was mildly obsessed with them??
3. Confidence: They are walking over to say hi and all your courage is finally being summoned to the surface. So what, you don't like them anymore anyways. It was just a simple high school crush that's long gone now.
4. Love: Nope, you were wrong. You love them again. As they're talking you remember all the reasons that you fell in love with them in your younger years.
5. Daydreaming: Do they have a significant other? We would look so good together now. Long distance can't be that hard right? I wonder what their parents are like...their parents would love me.
6. Regret: Why did I never pursue this? Oh wait I was 15, awkward and had braces and acne, that's why.
7. Coming back to reality: Love is dead and we will never be together. The world is cruel.
It seems as if you have just suffered through true love, forbidden relationships, and heartbreak all within a span of five minutes. You say your goodbyes and part ways, wondering if your heart could possibly handle more pain. And then it happens...a miracle. Your crush realizes how God damn fine you have gotten since they last saw you and asks for your number. Good things do come for those who wait.
Out of nowhere though you come to your senses and realize you are not into them at all anymore, you just had to prove to your 15 year old self that you were good enough for them. But, now you're too good for them and have many more hearts to break while you're home.
