A weekend in the City of Lights

This weekend I had the opportunity to go to Paris for a few days. What a trip! The first and last days were designated travel days, so we were able to spend 3 whole days in the city of lights. Even though they were travel days, we ate a lot of crescents and yummy fast food.

On the first day, we went straight to Notre Dame. It was so beautiful from the outside and it made me have flashbacks to watching "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". We got tickets ahead of time to climb to the top of the towers. We climbed all 387 steps to get a great view of the city. We got to hang out next to some pretty hideous gargoyles and the wonderful bells. The climb up was so narrow and windy, but totally worth it. You really get a 360 view of the whole city. On one side you could see the Eiffel tower hiding in the fog, and on the other Sacre Coeur sitting on the top of the hill. You can see the beautiful metallic rooftops across the city and the diverging and converging roads all around. This first impression made me fall in love with the city instantly.

After falling in love with the city from above, we roamed the streets below in search of food. We found a gelato place called Amorino that allows you to pick as many flavors as you want and forms them into a flower shape, topped with a delicious macaroon. It was so delicious. However, we needed much more filling food, so we found a small little restaurant only a few blocks away that served us a full 3-course meal for a really great price. The food was again, so delicious, and the service was great! The waiter was really funny and so nice to us.

After filling our bellies with delicious food, we headed over to the Louvre. Who knew a museum could be so large. We were only there for two hours before they had to force us out, and we saw maybe only about half of the museum. It is insane how much they have to offer there. One of the main pieces we made sure to see was the Mona Lisa. It was crowded around by people, so I had to push through to be able to see it, but it definitely was a sight to behold.

The museum was closing down so we had to leave unfortunately. But we ended up going to a Starbucks to recharge both our phones and our bodies! We were all getting so tired. After about an hour relaxing, we started to head towards the Eiffel tower. We wanted to watch the lights at night from the Champs Mar. On our way there we saw this little shop that had different kinds of sandwiches and pizzas and all sorts of yummy food, so we stopped there to grab something to eat. We were able to get it to go, so we ate our food on the field, watching the sun go down behind the Eiffel tower, and eventually seeing the Eiffel tower completely lit up.

The Eiffel tower is amazing, but it looks even cooler at night time with all of the lights. At around 10pm the light show started and the tower just dazzled in the dim light.

On the second day we started the day off with crepes. We were recommended to go to this specific crepe shop, La Creperie De Josselin. When we were trying to find it though, we realized that on this one street there are at least 10 other crepe shops all near each other. It was so strange but also kind of awesome that there's a street basically entirely dedicated to crepes.

There were so many different kinds of crepes to choose from! There were a variety of sweet ones and ones that had more sustenance to them. It was hard decision, but I decided to get a spinach, goat cheese, and cream crepe. It was ready within minutes and it was amazing. It was so gooey and filling. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

After eating our delicious crepes, we headed to the Jardin du Luxembourg. We walked around, admiring the flowers, various statues, and beautiful scenery. We came across some playgrounds that looked like a lot of fun, but you had to pay about 2 euros to get in. Even though it looked fun, we decided against it.

We eventually made our way to Sacre Coeur, which is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. It is so simple and elegant on the outside, and then you walk inside and it's so ornate with beautiful paintings and stained glass. The best part about the visit there was there was a mass going on and the nuns were singing a prayer of some sort. It was the most hauntingly beautiful thing I have ever heard. Despite not knowing any French, I could have stayed there for hours just listening to them.

Once we were all done there, we nonchalantly made our way to the Eiffel tower. We stopped at shops along the way and searched for restrooms so it took us awhile to get there. We even stopped at the little shop from the night before to get some food to eat before climbing to the top of the tower. We devoured the food and got in line to go to the top.

We climbed 669 steps to the second floor of the Eiffel tower. Not going to lie, I was getting a bit nervous because I am not a huge fan of heights, but we listened to some music on the way which definitely helped calmed my nerves. When we reached the second floor, the view from that was already spectacular. But we wanted to go all the way up to the summit, so we waited in line to get into the elevator to take us up.

The doors of the elevator opened and we walked out into this room with some windows and a staircase that took you outside. We went up the few steps and could see the entire city. It was breathtaking. Even though I was scared of how high we would be at first, I felt completely safe all the way up there. We took some awesome pictures and walked around to get different views of the city. We watched the sun set behind some clouds and ate some macarons. It was epic.

By the time we made it back down to the ground, the tower was lit up and the light show had started. We stayed only for a few minutes before heading back to our place.

On the third day, we started the day off with crepes again. We went back to crepe street, but decided to try a different crepe shop. We ended up going to La Creperie Bretonne. This time we all got sweet crepes. I got just a Nutella crepe, but my goodness, was it the best Nutella crepe I've ever had. It was so buttery and the sweetness from the Nutella made it a perfect breakfast.

After that delicious breakfast, we headed over to Champs Elysees. When we got off the metro stop close to it, it started downpouring. We got soaked! We took cover at the metro station for a little bit, but the rain was not letting up so we continued to walk towards Champs Elysees. We walked along the street going into some shops here and there if they didn't look too high end. Even though we were all wet, we made the most of it and had fun trying on some interesting clothes once we were fairly dried off.

We followed the road all the way down until we reached the Arc de Triomphe. It was pretty cool to see up close! The carvings on it have such great detail. One of the angels that is depicted has so much emotion in its face for just a carving. It was amazing to see.

After spending some time there, we headed towards the Eiffel tower once more to take a cruise down the Seine. It was so relaxing. We were able to just sit and enjoy the view of the city from the river. The sides of some of the bridges were so beautiful and decorative. It was really cool to see. Unfortunately, it started to downpour again when were about halfway through, so we had to go down below into the covered part of the boat, which still had a view of the city, but not as great of a view as the above part did.

Once the cruise was over, it was time for dinner. We ended up eating at this chain restaurant called Hippopotamus. It was basically a French steakhouse. It was pretty interesting. I ended up getting fish and chips, but it was easily one of the best fish and chips I've had. And of course we had to finish up the day with a dessert, so I got this huge caramel sundae that I devoured in a few minutes. It was a great last meal in Paris.

I can see why so many people fall in love with this city. It was a fairly clean city with beautiful sights and friendly people. I would love to go back there again to see more and eat more amazing food.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
