Embracing Real Beauty: Keynote Address By The Dove Real Beauty Campaign's Stacy Nadeau

On Wednesday February 24th at 7 pm, Colgate will have the unique and wonderful opportunity to both welcome and listen to the inspirational Stacy Nadeau speak in Love Auditorium.

For those unaware, Ms. Stacy Nadeau was one of the original models and spokeswomen of the groundbreaking Dove Real Beauty Campaign. The campaign, which launched in 2005, was revolutionary and garnered national media attention as it was the first marketing campaign that portrayed real women without any utilization of photoshop or editing tools. Rather, The Real Beauty Campaign comprised of advertisements with six average women, all of whom did not have any prior modeling experience, in their underwear. The women were not digitally retouched to appear differently or thinner as is standard in marketing and advertising campaigns. Dove's mission through this campaign was to "make women feel beautiful everyday by widening the stereotypical theme of beauty and by inspiring women to take great care of themselves," by portraying "real women with curves." Ms. Nadeau, who at the time was an industrial organizational psychology major at Depaul University in Chicago, was instantly thrown into national spotlight.

Though it has been nearly 11 years since the marketing campaign sparked a change in the discourse on body image in the United States, Ms. Nadeau continues to spread the lessons and the fundamental ideology of the Dove Real Beauty Campaign through her interactive and entertaining lecture series, "Embracing Beauty." The keynote address tells of the ways in which both men and women can incrementally alter the ways in which society perceives and critiques the definition of "beauty" as well as body image and its supposed standards. Her main objective through the Embracing Beauty lecture is to make individuals feel more beautiful and comfortable in their own skin by expanding and revolutionizing society's stereotypical view of what it really means to be beautiful.

Thanks to the positive-body image campus organization Project Beauty, in conjunction with the Shaw Wellness Institute and Colgate University's Counseling Center, Colgate students will have the opportunity to listen to and partake in this life changing and interactive lecture on February 24th. Project Beauty club co-founders Alyssa Berger '16 and Emily Sisto '16 are eager to have Stacy Nadeau return to campus and spread this important message once again. Project Beauty sponsored Ms. Nadeau's address at Colgate nearly two years ago and has worked effortlessly to bring Ms. Nadeau back to campus as the previous lecture proved to be a great success.

"Stacy Nadeau sheds light on a topic that is often times swept under the rug. She has an important message to send to both men and women alike surrounding perceptions of body image. We believe her presentation will most definitely resonate with everyone who attends!" the Project Beauty co-founders noted.

Whether you are male or female on Colgate University's campus, Stacy Nadeau's Embracing Beauty Keynote Address is a must-attend event. Her lecture is both insightful and entertaining and will truly inspire you to alter both your own personal, and society's perception of beauty and body image. We can all feel better about ourselves and make our nation a happier and more body-positive place. One way to start: be at Love Auditorium on February 24th at 7 p.m.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
