Embrace Your Inner White Girl

We all have an inner white girl.

Embrace Your Inner White Girl

At one point or another, we've probably all heard about the stereotypical white girl. You know, the one who wears UGGs and infinity scarves, loves Starbucks and Nutella and is constantly on her phone. Most of the time when we hear about them, it is filled with some negativity. "You are such a typical white girl," or "Don't be such a white girl."

Well, I am going to have to disagree with that. I say be as white girl as you want, and we shouldn't judge someone for that because we all have a little white girl in us.

Now I know some of you are probably shaking your heads at my comment, but I have found it to be true. Even though I am a guy, I definitely have a few white girl tendencies. I’m not ashamed to admit that I love pumpkin spice flavored things or that coffee is almost my lifeblood. I also am not ashamed to admit that I spend numerous hours on my phone checking and updating social media, as well.

One of my best friends who works with cows and pigs on a farm and isn’t afraid to get dirty loves wearing scarves and leggings. She’s found her inner white girl and has embraced it.

Another one of my friends who is big into lifting and working out enjoys listening to the music of Meghan Trainor, Sean Mendes and 5 Seconds of Summer. He’s got his inner white girl, and he's not afraid to admit it.

I’ve heard people around campus say things like “This is so me.” Or “I can’t even.” These people look the furthest thing from the stereotypical white girl. So you’ve probably done or said things that are about as stereotypical of white girls as it can get without even realizing it.

The biggest question I have for people who put down white girls is why? Why do we make fun of someone for liking these things? Just because a majority of girls (or guys) like the same thing, does it make it any less special to them?

I say do whatever white girl things make you happy. If you love going on Tumblr or Pinterest and scrolling through endless posts, go for it. If you want a star tattoo on your foot because you like it, do it. If you enjoy pumpkin spice flavored items as much as I do, eat as much as you want.

Don’t let other people’s judgement of you keep you from enjoying things you like because chances are, they probably have some inner white girl dying to get out.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
