As many of you may know, I am part of the large group of people who graduated college less than six months ago and have been inevitably thrust by fate into a whirlwind of transition. In the last four months, I have accomplished a major life goal (graduation), said a hundred goodbyes, said even more hellos, been hired, moved, dated, broke up, interviewed, cried, quit and moved again -- all to bring me back to the same house I lived in my whole life, the same church I rebelled from five years ago, the same family that has loved me the whole time and an endless amount of opportunity.
I'm here to tell you that my summer has been completely insane. My emotions have been a roller coaster; the most stable thing in my life was Jesus (and JoJo's completely obvious love for Jordan all summer long). There were such deep moments of confusion: Why is everything so uncertain? More than half of my relationships felt like they were changing on a daily basis, just because we went from eating in the caf every day together to "really hoping that one of these weekends will work out!" I was never sure what would happen next, because my next steps seemed completely uncertain, and every time I thought I had a plan, it slipped through my fingers. I knew I would most likely be living in a house somewhere in America and would probably be working at a job... somewhere... probably... I just didn't have a single detail worked out. It is really, really hard.
To be perfectly honest, I've never been the type to completely "embrace uncertainty." I'm actually the opposite. I pretty much insist on having a plan and hoping that everyone will follow through with it. Not knowing what was next all summer really tested that part of me. It made me anxious often, and I spent tons of time in prayer just asking for the anxiety that came along with uncertainty to go away.
This is what I know: I am 21 years old, I have a bachelor's degree, I live in Buffalo, New York and I serve a God that is much, much, much bigger than my uncertainty.
Moving home has been scary. I'm facing lots of demons from the past that I didn't think I'd have to ever face again. I am, just like hundreds of thousands of other young professionals, searching for a job in my field. I am searching far and wide for a community who loves and wants to serve Jesus as much as I do, but most of all, I am going to embrace the uncertainty.
I've decided to stop trying to plan every single detail of my life because more often than not, it really does not work out how I planned it.
I know without a shadow of a doubt -- God is faithful. He has proven that time and time again, which is exactly why I have the confidence to dive into uncertainty.
My motto: faith the size of a mustard seed, my friends. Cling to that little bit of faith and let that help you embrace the uncertainty.
"Embrace uncertainty. Some of the most beautiful chapters of our lives won't have a title until much later." - Bob Goff
