An Open Letter to My Niece

You, my darling, you are the light in a dark world. Ever since you were born, you have taught me so much about life and continue to teach me new things everyday. I never got to experience growing up with a younger sibling or having someone younger than me who requires me to be a positive role model. And you have given me this opportunity to be a better person and to be the best aunt I could be for you and your brothers.

With that, I'm learning more and more everyday. You are the most caring and loving little kiddo in the world. It's almost impossible to feel nothing but happiness when you are in a room. You bring out the inner child in me and you help me remember how beautiful life truly is. It's terrible to see how this world can make people so cruel when all they know is laughter and happiness at your age.

Ella, I know you can't read this yet or you may never read this, but I'm so happy that I hold this role in your life and that I get to experience and see you grow. I can't wait to see the amazing person you grow up to be and the accomplishments that are ahead of you. I'm so proud of you, and I will continue to be your biggest fan. No matter what you do in this life, I'll try my hardest to always be there for you.

You are a beautiful little human. I pray every day that negative people do not take that light and innocence from you because you are so special. I pray that you grow up feeling no hurt from anything, and if you do I'll be right by your side to help you through it. I never thought I would be best friends with a five year old, but you're the greatest friend anyone could ever ask for. I'll always love you even though you steal my phone from me to play games, scare me by telling me you see a rainbow unicorn in the sky or jump on top of me to be your "horsey" and yell at me to giddy up. I love every moment with you and I will never get annoyed by you. I thank God for your existence everyday and I will always strive to help your parents give you the best life.

You're my little princess.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
