It's the best time of the year again, sorority recruitment! Sororities everywhere are getting ready to add their newest additions to their chapters. It's an exciting time where you can get to know and connect with different women on your campus, and potentially your new sisters. There is no stereotypical sorority women, meaning we all come from different backgrounds, have different interests, and goals. This gives us the opportunity to grow as a person, and come together as a family. Recruitment can be very intimidating when going through it for the first time, so here are some tips to help get you through.
8. Have an open mind
Coming into recruitment, girls tend to their research beforehand. The problem with that is, not everything you hear is true. Don't focus on the house your friends like, or the so called "Top Tier sorority". You should be focusing on what each chapter has to offer you and where you feel most comfortable. This is an exciting time to get to know these girls, so give them a chance to.
7. Remember, we were in your shoes once
We've been there, we've done that, so we understand. We understand the nerves and the overwhelming feeling of meeting all these new faces, but try to enjoy this experience and not let the nerves get the best of you. This is a wonderful opportunity and chance to connect with other women. We're no different than you, so be confident and leave those nerves behind.
6. Dress comfortable and cute
We all tend to get caught up in what we're wearing and how others will see us, but just because we look good, doesn't mean we feel good. You're going to be walking a lot, especially on a bigger campus with a lot of sororities, so make sure you're comfortable. if you just got those new shoes that still haven't been broken in, but match your outfit so perfectly, leave them behind. It's not worth the blisters. It is possible to look cute and be comfortable, you don't need top designer items to do so.
5. Personal hygiene
Please brush your teeth, wear deodorant and go easy on the perfume. You're going to be around a lot of women, probably in closed doors, so these will just make things easier. Not trying to sound mean, but you will also be talking with women who are only a couple feet away, so we probably shouldn't be able to tell that you had tuna for lunch.
4. Don't expect a "Hollywood" sorority
We've all seen how greek is portrayed in movies, not very good. You need to know that we are not all model material, have brand new cars, or go out every night. Joining a sorority is a commitment, we raise money for our philanthropies, study together, and are involved in various groups on campus. Please don't have your expectations set for only hanging out with your friends and going out, because you will be let down. we are more than a social group, we are constantly looking to better ourselves and others.
3. Be respectful
Remember your opinion won't be the same as everyone else's, just because you didn't connect with a certain house, doesn't mean the girl right next to you didn't. It's very easy to hurt someone's feelings, so watch what you say around others. There is no reason to act like you don't want to be at a certain house, be respectful because people put a lot of time and effort into this. You have nothing to lose being nice to others.
2. Be yourself
Going through recruitment you may feel the need to lie to impress these girls, but you shouldn't. You won't find a house that you feel comfortable in if you lie just to get them to like you. Starting off a connection on a lie will only lead to disaster. Just be yourself, there isn't a need to pretend you are something you are not. Find a house that let's you be you.
1. Have fun!
Recruitment can be a long and draining process. However, this is an extraordinary opportunity that can change your college career. You will be making friends not only with members of the sororities, but women who are next to you going through the same recruitment process. They can become some of your new best friends. Recruitment is a chance to learn more about your campus and what being in a sorority actually means. While you may feel very stressed out don't forget to sit back and enjoy the ride we call recruitment.
"Keep calm and prepare for recruitment."
