Being an education major means a lot of people question you and why you want to become a teacher of some sort. I hate hearing the same things over and over again when I tell someone I want to be a teacher. Everyone loves something different in life. Some people love the health field, some love business and others love teaching. Being a teacher is more than just standing in front of a classroom and teaching about a certain topic. Every major is hard in its own way. Here are some things that education majors are tired of hearing.
1. "It's so easy!"
Nothing is easy. Everything has its own difficulties. Making lesson plans every day isn't that easy. You have to know what you want to talk about that day. Try to teach 30 or more kids a topic without messing up. Grading isn't easy. It takes a lot of time to grade papers or test and get them back to the students on time.
2. "But you have summers off."
Having the summers off from teaching, just means you have to find another job. You have to start thinking about how to decorate the class when you come back. The only nice thing about summer is that you get time to start planning ahead for the school year coming up.
3. "Teachers don't make a lot."
Yes, okay teachers don't make a lot compared to doctors or lawyers. Most teachers teach because they love it. They love helping students and teaching them so they can better their future. They love seeing a students face when they understand the topic. The money that teachers make depends on the state or the region that they teach in. Most teachers are just happy that they are teaching. They aren't teaching for the money, they teach because they love it.
4. "Those who can't do, teach."
Just no. Being a teacher takes a rare and patient person. Being a teacher means you have to be patient because not everyone learns at the same rate as other people. You have to be able to explain the material in different ways so that everyone can understand it. You have to be able to deal with parents when they call and complain to you. You have to be able to take criticism from other teachers.
5. "You could do so much more with your brains."
Yes I might be able to become a doctor, but I want to be a teacher. Yes I might have smart brains, but I want to put those smart brains to teach. I can relay what I know to other people. I can help benefit others with my knowledge. I take it as a compliment when someone says I am too smart to be a teacher, but I also take it as an insult. Others don't know what I am capable of.
So next time you hear someone is an education major, think about these things that we are tired of hearing.
