20 Things I'm Doing Instead Of Editing Odyssey Articles

The #struggle is real

My name is Sarah Fields and I'm the Editor in Chief for The Odyssey at Murray State University, a college in western Kentucky. I took on this role as the EIC in May of this year, so the idea of being in charge of people is not only daunting but scares the crap out of me sometimes. It's unreal to think that while I'm studying to work in administrative assistance, I'm suddenly in charge of a bunch of people and am here to make sure they become disciplined enough to be able to meet a deadline. I'm 20 and I'm barely able to make deadlines myself, so it was daring of me to take on this role.

But I took the role on and I love it.

However, it's been a hard adjustment, to say the least. I still have a hard time getting up on a Sunday morning to edit all of two articles (if that). Needless to say, I always end up doing other things to get away with not editing my articles.

1. Reading fanfiction

Literally, that's all I have done with my summer. I have read tons and tons and TONS of fanfiction (Wattpad is literally the best). Fun fact: Did you know that fanfiction is one of the most read categories on Wattpad? It's crazy how imaginative and original a piece of fanfiction can be!

2. Writing song lyrics

Well, I have to practice at it sometime, yes?

3. Writing music to go with my song lyrics

You most definitely should not be letting your music theory skills get rusty. It's not good for the soul, after all.

4. Pick tomatoes from the garden

What? Those tomatoes were going todie if I didn't pick the right this second!

5. Showing your younger brother memes

Nothing brings more satisfaction in life than showing your siblings a wholesome meme.

6. Watching videos of baby goats

Because baby goats? are?? pure???

7. Finally responding to all of those text messages I've been ignoring.

Because...yeah.

8. Practicing your "The Voice" audition song

Because while you may never get the opportunity to audition for The Voice, you might one day, so you have to have your audition song flawless.

9 Writing fanfiction

Because everyone needs to know that Harry Styles did that thing in this imaginary world I totally made up because reality is a...yeah.

10. Petting my cat

There is nothing better in the world.

11. Contemplating rehabilitating a stray cat because it looks as scrawny as yours did when it ran away for six weeks

I'm emotionally raw over that even still and that was two years ago.

12. Watch sweet tea brew

Yeah, you read that right. It's fun to watch, especially with cold brew sweet teas.

13. Planning a wedding

I mean, while I technically am planning a wedding, it's still probably something I would have been doing regardless of whether or not it was a method of procrastination.

14. Practicing my hand lettering

It's an art form that requires daily practice. I'm sorry I have to practice it right now. I don't make the rules, I just follow them.

15. Annoying my brother to write articles for The Odyssey

He's been slacking off all summer.

16. Sleeping

Because who actually gets the correct amount of sleep? Pssh.

17. Browsing the Internet

I've been doing that since I was 14. That won't change anytime soon.

18. Obsessing over One Direction

Because they were so good and pure. *sobs into the void*

19. Playing games on my phone

Because that's what's important in life.

20. Have sass competitions with my mother

Because being boring is no fun.

Okay, okay, OKAY. I'll get the articles edited. Geez.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
