Facing Your Fears (Even When It's Not Spooky Season)

Because doing what scares you shouldn't be confined to one month

Facing Your Fears (Even When It's Not Spooky Season)

It is spooky season, my friends. Ghost, goblins, ghouls… a lot of other monsters that don't start with the same letters.

Let's be real. Halloween is primarily (if not entirely) about the festivities - trick-or-treating, pumpkin spice everything, witchy decor on the front porch. But once you get past the shiny orange bow surrounding the day, there's a less superficial element to it that's almost admirable.

Typically, people don't subject themselves to activities that make them uncomfortable, specifically if that discomfort is rooted in fear. During the month of October, however, people run toward what scares them. Haunted houses. Horror movies. Gross costumes and fake blood. It's all part of the fun!

Recently I've been thinking… what would happen if we ran toward what scares us year round? Not like "wow that alley looks super sketchy and unsafe, better go check it out," but more in the sense of running toward things we are afraid to try. A lot of times, we miss out on life-changing opportunities because they require ambition that we are afraid to give. The more energy it takes out of us, the more afraid we are to give it a shot.

News flash: most times, you lose nothing by trying. So do it. Take the time to apply to that internship. Submit an application to that organization you've been wanting to try. Put on a pair of leggings and go for a run. Shoot your shot and talk to that person you've been vibing with. Try a new sport. Take a chance and study abroad for a summer. Overcome your doubt and change your major to something that inspires you.

While all of these decisions seem relatively simple, they all have one thing in common: they require you to take a personal risk. Whether it's time, money, pride, or comfort, you put something on the line every time you face a fear. And that's terrifying. But it's worth it.

Imagine the reward of trying out a new activity and finding a new life passion. Starting a conversation and finding a new friend. Getting involved in something that becomes your calling. The benefits outweigh any potential risks.

So go ahead and face your fears. Spooky season year round, baby! You've got nothing to lose.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
