You've made it 'till 2 a.m., the bar's closed, you have "the drunchies," and all you can think about is how phenomenal food sounds.
But unfortunately, at 2 a.m., the only things open are McDonald's, Jack In The Box, and Sonic.
Oh, and don't even get me started with the Taco Bell runs that end with six tacos, a Cheesy Gordita Crunch and an order of Cinnabon bites.
The ins and outs of eating well are extensive, but slacking off is what our generation is best at, right?
I get it; it can be really hard to eat healthy in college. Between working odd hours, maintaining a terrible sleep schedule, and writing papers until 2am, food is abused during these reckless years of undergrad. We used to eat to live; now some live to eat.
But why is it that so few are grossed out by these bad behaviors? Am I being uptight about health? No, my peers are just being lazy.
Okay, so I feel the need to make a disclaimer about myself. I can’t explain exactly how I eat, but I don’t eat dairy or wheat for health reasons. I exercise for fun. Vegetables are (almost) #1 bae and I actually enjoy taking the stairs. Some could say I’ve got it “down”. But you know what? I crave a 4x4 with Animal Fries from In-n-Out more times than I'd like to admit. Doritos are incredible. Give me a pint of Half Baked from Ben & Jerry's and I'll finish it. Just because I’m strict about my diet doesn’t mean I don’t want to cave. I'm not being hypocritical, either. I just refrain from using target words like "vegan" because anything produced by Seth MacFarlane (i.e. Family Guy, America n Dad, or Ted 2) makes it clear that we are not welcome among fellow omnivores. But I can eat my emotions for sure, don't get me wrong. Food cravings are instinctual, normal, and… abused.
Stressed? Eat. Socializing? Eat. Drunk? EAT indefinitely. College has no limit to the possibilities in downing those calories, and the frequency of it happening is almost consistent. So why don’t most do anything about it? The unfortunate truth about most in our generation nowadays is that eating healthy can “wait”. It’s as if there’s a pause button that we press as we get through these four years, and it’s not until we graduate that the bad habits become detrimental. It doesn’t matter if it’s your third night in a row eating Taco Bell, it was the only thing open and you’ve got to cram for that exam… right?
I’ve heard it all too much. The saddest part about this phenomenon is that there seems to be a divide between those who care about their bodies and those who don’t. Yeah, I said it. If you consistently consume crap, you don’t care. And then the “health nuts” get teased for choosing the apple? It’s a baffling cycle.
I love the arguments like "eating healthy is too expensive"or "it's more convenient to grab something that happens to be less healthy."
I giggle at these responses because it's like trying to argue that we shouldn't brush our teeth because toothpaste prices have gone up, or we shouldn't wake up early to go to work because that means being responsible. The excuses have to stop in order to make a change. And coming from a girl whose last grocery bill was $39, it's all doable.
I’ve tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle so far, which includes a limited amount of takeout and buying my own groceries, but I do attest to the occasional crap intake. It’s only human, right? However, the real problem underlies in those who turn a blind eye to the whole situation. It’s like watching someone dig their own hole deeper and deeper, one bag of hot Cheetos after another.
As a generation that is so influential to the future ahead, it’s imperative that we apply good habits from the start of our independence. It’s really not that difficult to make choices that your parents drilled into your head in early childhood. Sure, we college students think we're invincible, but there has to be a limit to that at some point. I speak passionately about this because I hate seeing young people kill themselves over things they can control.
Your $60 t-shirt may be trendy, but eating crap isn't.
