I've seen numerous students on these two wheeled scooters that have no handles since fall quarter started. They're quite an interesting way to travel, but they have met the end of the ban hammer at numerous universities for the fires that occur due to the batteries that power it. Eastern Washington University will join this list as of Wednesday, January 20th.
University president Mary Cullinan added EWU to the list of universities that have banned the scooter. As of now, students are no longer permitted to use the two wheeled hover boards on the college campus or within residence halls and class buildings.
President Cullinan states, "Because we don't have the means to safely store the devices outside, it would be best if students and employees do not bring hoverboards onto university property."
Students who are currently in possession of them can take them to the student housing office in Synamncut 104 during normal business hours, where they will be stored through the remainder of winter and spring quarters.
Cullinan further offered apologies to those who this ban might inconvenience, but stood firm behind the decision that this was done for campus safety. Once the manufacturer finds a way to fix the issue the university will look into lifting the ban.
