Anyone who has ever lived in the great state we call Illinois knows how crazy the weather can be.
On Saturday, Feb. 20, it was 72 degrees and sunny in the lovely town of Charleston, home to Eastern Illinois University. Just when students thought the cold weather was behind them, a winter weather advisory was issued starting Tuesday night and ending Thursday morning.
To many people's surprise, student's woke up to this on their phones and emails:
(Shout out to my mom that texted me before I even woke up that morning so I didn't start getting ready for class.)
The university has not had a campus closure due to the weather since the winter of 2014.
The electricity went out all over town but only temporarily.
Once the power was back on, students chose to celebrate this rare occasion in several ways. This was the very first snow day in some student's college careers.
Some people went to the grocery store to make a big breakfast, stayed inside curled up under blankets and watched movies.
Others decided to celebrate this day by going out and spending the day with friends. Girls bundled up in layers of t-shirts and sweatshirts, two pairs of socks, winter boots, and stocking hats. Guys put on their favorite jersey over a long sleeve shirt and everyone bared the cold wind and snow.
Several snowmen were built at off campus houses, by college students, of course. Friends teamed up to have snowball fights, and went inside to stay warm and catch up with friends afterwards, just like we used to do in grade school.
Bars and restaurants in Charleston opened as scheduled and had snow day specials. The Penalty Box hosted a wing eating competition for the first time.
Sure, everyone could have spent the snow day inside catching up on homework, but we all know that we have limited days like this in college before we're thrown out into the real world and have to actually go to work when kids are out of school for the day.
It was a fun, easy going day in the life of an EIU student.
We might as well live it up while we still can before snow days are just a memory.
