Everywhere you go on-campus recently, someone is sick. While at first there were rumors of mono going around, it now has settled down to just a really successful case of the cold virus. Everyone who lives on-campus or is on-campus frequently will get it eventually. It's almost inevitable. However, there are some ways to help make your life a little better while fighting off the "Radford Plague."
1. Drink lots of fluids.
Water should be your new best friend. Carry a water bottle with you everywhere. If you don't like plain water, good news, they make these amazing things that put flavor in them. You can even get some that have vitamins essential for fighting off the cold virus. You should also try hot tea if you have a sore throat or cough. This tends to break up the mucus that causes those symptoms.
2. Cough drops
My recommendation is the Hall's cough drops in the black blag. They are amazing for sore throats and opening up your airways if you have a stuffy nose and can't breathe. If you don't particularly like the taste of menthol though, they make cough drops that are cherry or honey flavored. Just find the one that helps you the most.
3. Tissues
These are a must. I use the Puffs with lotion or the ones with Vick's Vapor Rub just because those don't make my nose red and the latter helps me breathe. Always keep tissues with you too because some classrooms don't have tissues or napkins that are easily accessible and you don't want to be wiping your nose on your sleeve or hand.
4. Cold and sinus medicine
Obviously there is no medicine to cure the cold virus but they do make medicine to treat the symptoms. Dayquil and Nyquil work tremendously but Tylenol Cold and Sinus also gets the job done. As long as it says it's for the symptoms of a cold it will help you. You have to take it regularly as well or you will suffer greatly.
5. Rest
I know it's hard to accomplish this one with classes and all kinds of fun stuff going on but believe me, it's not fun when you are at an event for Honors Academy and you have no voice to network with your professors because you decided to go to that party and use your voice all night long. Sleep when you can. It makes a world of difference because it gives your body a chance to recuperate.
6. Chicken Noodle Soup
This sounds so corny but honestly it does help. It's yet another hot liquid that helps break up phlegm that causes sore throats, coughs, etc. Plus it's really tasty and really cheap. It definitely won't break your bank on your next Walmart run.
Being sick definitely is not fun and it does take away from your college experience, but wouldn't you rather miss a couple of events than have to skip class to go to the doctor because you let it get to the point of no return? Just know your limits when you are sick and don't push yourself.
