So, Earth Day was last week. April 22, 2016. It was a day when we all got pretty warm, fuzzy and cozy with each other. We reminded ourselves this planet is precious, and made resolutions to do better with our eco-friendliness.
Right. Those resolutions are probably about as well kept as New Year's resolutions. As in, not at all.
Every day should be Earth Day. Why don't we care more? I mean, we should. Look at these photos for instance.
This is a YouTube search for pollution related videos. There are some good ones out there, and I'm really proud of YouTube for putting these ones first, despite their low view count. Because they actually have something to do with pollution and how we're destroying our Earth.
But look at this picture:
Same search, except this time I tweaked the filters to show me the ones with the most views. It's no secret that music is one of YouTube's most wonderful qualities, allowing us to listen to almost anything, and their playlist feature upgrades have come in handy. But come on, it's ridiculous that a music video gets over 2 million views and one about our home and the place we live and breathe only gets about 200 thousand.
Is it because we don't want to look at it? I mean, don't get me wrong, these videos are gross, and are not pretty. Look at this one, for instance.
WARNING: Even the animations get a little graphic concerning animal cruelty and everything. But it gets the point across.
If you did watch it, pretty awful, right? But it's ALL true. I mean, damn, if we're not blind to the truth. We clearly choose what we want to see, like we hear only what we want to hear.
We've only got one shot with this planet. There are no second chances. Stop being wasteful. Seriously.
I can't talk either though. I like my car. I like my Taco Bell. I like not paying an extra bill for a recycling option. I'm guilty.
But my problem is that I have the privilege to make a difference. I have the insight, the know how, to actually be able to see all of this stuff and know it's wrong, and the worst part of my privilege? I have the privilege to look away from it all.
This video made me see things a little differently.
Maybe it's because them personifying those poor little bottles made me feel sorry for them. Man, will I feel sorry for myself and all my potential descendants when they're dying because of global warming, global overpopulation, global flooding, global fires, acid rain...you get my point.
TL;DR
Earth Day should be every day, damn it.
