I get the question a lot: Why do you dye your hair? It comes it different forms, like "why do dye your hair so often" or why a particular color. Sometimes I like to give a funny answer, or sometimes I'll look them dead in the eye and say that blue is my natural hair color. The real answer, though, is that dying my hair is the perfect solution to everything.
The first time I dyed my hair it was just highlights, and my sister did them while I was in sixth grade. My mom hated them, of course, and took me somewhere professional to get them "fixed" but both before and after I loved them and I was easily hooked. A few years later I got my sister to dye all of my hair red, and after that I have dyed my hair at least once a year (usually more).
My hair has been red, black, blue, purple, pink, blonde, green, and a few combinations of any of those. I haven't had it at more than an inch of my natural color in about a year and a half. I am a card carrying member of Sally's Beauty Supply and I have a lot of opinions on how to care for bleached hair. That's a lot of time, money, and thought given to something that's relatively temporary. And I think everybody should do it.
Change is good for us. It teaches us to let things go and to go with the flow if we need to. And if you're not really ready for the big changes of adult life like living on your own or working nine to five, little steps like dying your hair are good for getting you started. If you're worried about picking the right color, have your hair stylist help you out. If you're worried that blue or purple is taking it a little too far, dye your hair a different natural shade. Go dark brown instead of light, or red instead of blonde.
I dye my hair because I love change and it's the easiest way to change my life in a day. I think that anyone who enjoys or fears or even has no opinion on change should try dying their hair at least once, just to see what happens. It's just hair; it'll grow back.
