Friday, June 3 was National Doughnut Day.
I feel that doughnuts are a universally liked food, and I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't enjoy the sugary treat. As a kid, family members would take me with them to Dunkin' Donuts on our days out so they could get coffee. I would benefit from this task with my choice of doughnut. It was always one of my favorite things to do.
For as long as I could remember, my favorite doughnut has always been the strawberry frosted (with sprinkles, of course). My brother liked glazed, and my dad liked the Boston Creme. A trip to Dunkin' Donuts always meant I would get to have my favorite, or maybe we'd get lucky and get a box of munchkins.
Before I was even introduced to coffee, my family started favoring Starbucks. Going there, I always wished to see my favorite doughnut, and was disappointed. None of the bagels, cookies, or cake pops at Starbucks ever interested me as much as my favorite doughnut.
As a kid, I definitely liked Dunkin' Donuts more than Starbucks.
Today, the battle between Dunkin' and Starbucks is one that millions of Americans take seriously. I know most of my family prefer Starbucks coffee, as do a lot of my friends.
To me, both companies have their strengths and flaws. Dunkin' has its trademark donuts, munchkins and honestly a lot more food to offer in my opinion. Starbucks can get fancier with their drinks, which is enticing and a total plus. Neither can really outdo the other in sugar (if you know what to order at each place). And both have the caffeine that everyone needs to get them through the day.
Honestly, I have no preference as a college student. It really depends on my mood. Do I want an iced Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks, or my large iced coffee with almond milk from Dunkin'? If I'm feeling a doughnut, I know where to go, but if I want a Passion Tea Lemonade, it's the other way.
However, on Friday, June 3, all coffee-drinkers probably headed to Dunkin' Donuts, because who can pass up that free strawberry or chocolate frosted? Certainly not me!
Looks like Dunkin' dominates this round.
