A Drug Called Music

Instead of sating your desire with outside distractions, divert your attention to the real reason you bought the tickets; for the artist.

A Drug Called Music

The search and consumption of drugs.

The search and winning over of women.

The search of some higher power to overcome.

The one result that one would expect from going to a concert is to listen to some good live music surrounded by people who also enjoy the sounds. But no, more important conquests are to be found when I go to concerts with my friends.

I am somewhat of an amateur to going to concerts but I think the band or artist you paid money to see should have the attention and not alternative side operations. Constantly, I feel as if I am the odd man out when we go because I want to hear the music, I want to listen to the live audio and feedback, I want to feel the rhythm through my body. What I do not want to find is a women, do drugs, and have the greatest high of my entire life. The music should be enough of a high if the artist is important to you. Lately I find more satisfying concerts when I go with one other person, my best friend.

We have a few beverages, of course, when in the venue, but we tend to steer clear of secondary highs because the connection between us and the music is a treasure all in its own. We are going to see a band soon that we have planning to see for nearly a decade! This kind of organization and planning does not involve outside sources of pleasure but rather we confine our love for the music to listening and the sound. Instead of relying on the support of distractions, the music is where we define the sensation of happiness and love.

It is true entertainment to listen to a band pour their heart and soul into live event for an audience willing to listen for hours. The skill, the atmosphere, the genuine sound, the effort, the one wrong lyric, they all culminate to create an environment in which creativity, happiness, pleasure, peace, and honesty are bridged between the viewer/listener and artist(s). The summit of this connection succeeds what any drug or women could come close to achieving.

Try it. Next time you are going to a concert, bring a friend who shares the same enthusiasm and passion for the artist or band. Spend countless hours memorizing the songs, making stupid set lists that may be the one they play or may not, follow the band on social media for the teasing and anticipation. Try to express what you feel when listening to their music into words and have a conversation with the purpose of why this concert is one to never forget. I guarantee it will be more satisfying than any convert you go to where the main goal is to make it a night no one will forget, but never remember.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
