Just A Dream: An Open Letter to Christina Grimmie

A great talent lost.

I first heard you sing when I was in the sixth or seventh grade. It was a turning point for me with music and my relationship with my best friend who introduced me to you. Before I listened to your music, I would listen to Taylor Swift and all those little preteen girlie music that was popular back then. I couldn't believe your talent until I listened to you sing over and over again for days and nights on end after that first time. I never knew someone could sing with such force and power at such a young age (you were 16 then).

To be honest, I heard a small number of your covers and medleys because I was low-key jealous of your voice. But you were always so pretty -- your hair, your face and the way you would wear headphones in your covers. I never would have imagined seeing your talents bring you to extraordinary places like commercials alongside Selena Gomez and the reality singing competition show "The Voice" with Adam Levine of Maroon 5 as your coach. That was probably the coolest pairing I have ever witnessed on television ever.

There are no words to describe the cruelty of what happened to you. When I first heard about it, I had just woken up, picked up my laptop and it was the first thing I saw on Facebook. I thought it was a cruel joke that some rude person on the internet was playing but then I looked up your name and the news of what had happened blew up on Google. I believe that no one deserves the fate that ultimately ended your life in any way shape or form and as much as I and the rest of your fandom wish that it never happened, it did.

This event was the first of three horrifyingly true events that occurred within that same week around the same area. The capacity of people's cruelty has been growing more evident as these events piled up so close to home to innocent people like you. I guess the reason why I mentioned this was because I know how you have faith in a higher being, a belief that I share also. Your faith has been known through your cover of "In Christ Alone" and your YouTube channel. You did that so bravely, it is admirable. And because of your bravery and strong faith, I hope that you'll be praying for the lot of us still here on Earth -- for humanity -- that we will be at the very least OK. Everything seems to be leading towards doom and destruction. It may be pessimistic -- but a little true. At least you're in a better place.

I once saw this really long list of "rules" that every person should live their life by and one of the rules said to live life as an exclamation, not an explanation. I think that's why people liked you so much, even though you were a girl on the road to fame, you always seemed to be such a down-to-Earth girl.

Your life, accomplishments and your voice will be dearly missed.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
