Drag Racing..? The car racing? Nope. I'm talking about something a little more exciting than fast cars. DRAG QUEENS! Of course this show is tons of fun to watch because Alyssa Edwards still hates Coco Montrese, because Phi Phi O' Hara told Sharon Needles to "Go back to Party City where she belongs", and because Laganja Estranja feels "VERY attacked" .. I could go on for days about the hilarious shade that's thrown season after season but I think the bigger picture of this show is definitely overlooked.
RuPaul, A.K.A. Supermodel of the World, has hosted this show for 9 seasons (with many more to come) and he and the chosen queens have SERVED it to us every single one. These lovely ladies give up so much just to slip on a beautiful, hand-sewn dress and to put on unforgettable shows. They live off such little money so that they can to live their dreams. They teach us to do what we absolutely love regardless of the pay. It's our life, so let's do what we were born to do.
This show brings so much light and hope for the gay community and for everyone around the world. It informs those who may not be familiar of the triumphs and struggles these people go through. On the aftershow, RuPaul Untucked, you sometimes see these girls get messages from family members, their significant other, friends, etc. or you get to hear every little detail about the experiences that they have to live through. Usually when these things are discussed, the queens breakdown in tears from all the overwhelming emotions. So many of them have been kicked out of their own homes, been "disowned" by their parents, have suffered loss, you name it, but on a brighter note, these life obstacles have made these people stronger than ever and even led them to become the amazing queens they are today. Those who watch this show that have dealt with or are dealing with similar issues now know that there is hope for them too.
I will rave about this show until the day I die. It lifted my spirits on my darkest days days. It also taught me to accept others and to accept and love myself UNCONDITIONALLY. I've become completely enamored and inspired by the drag/LGBT community all because of a TV show I accidentally came across in my preteen years. The amount of lessons I've learned from this show range from "Don't be shady, be a lady" to "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?" and these lessons have definitely come in handy. It's more than just reality TV, it's an eye opener. It's a life saver. A life changer .
